Q.
Homeschooling Special Needs Child in Southern California?
Hello, I work with a family (I'm the home health aide and also the one on one aide for school) who has a disabled little girl who is seven years old. She has autism, severe develpmental delay, seizure disorder, vision problems, heart problems, bleeding disoder, non-verbal, sensory processing disorder, etc. Her family is having a very hard time finding an appropriate classroom for her to be in. The closest thing we have found right now is a county program where she has to be on the bus an hour each way. She lives in the walnut district, but that district ... (Asked by littledeaftink)

You wrote--Her family is having a very hard time finding an appropriate classroom for her to be in. The closest thing we have found right now is a county program where she has to be on the bus an hour each way. Is the family trying to get help on their own, or is the school helping them? surely this child is in special ed and it is the schools responsibility to follow federal special ed laws and provide what this child needs, free of charge for the parents. you wrote-She lives in the walnut district, but that district has no low ...(Answered by jdeekdee)

Well, obviously the goal is to get the child to use the potty independently, but it's hard to know the STO without knowing the age, ability and deficits. Yes, she's visually impaired, but can she read braille, does she have ANY sight? Has she mastered a cane, does she have a dog, by what means does she travel through the school? What routine do you already have in place? Does she willingly attend, is she compliant in directions? One of the most important thing with children who are developmentally delayed is that you have to build concrete steps. Those are most ...(Answered by )

I teach students with SPMH at the high school level....I have a special class in a regular school. They almost always require a special class at least part time, but can definitely spend time in the general population. The special class is often necessary for students with physcial impairments (to use special PT equipment) or special needs regarding feeding or toileting (assistance or equipment) or extreme behavioral or health issues. However, given assistance, they can participate in classes like art or music with their peers.....go to pep rallies, go to the cafeteria, media center, work at basic jobs around ...(Answered by DuneFL)

Q.
Does the term age appropriate apply to the developmentally disabled?
And if so, does it apply to mental or physical age? My boss and I have some disagreement with this particular term and I have searched all over the internet to find a true description of this term..and all I find is descriptions referring to small children. We have clients whose ages average around the mid 40's...but range from 18 to 70. There are clients that like to play with dolls....become obsesseive and possesive of their dolls. I would like to tell my boss...take that barbie from that client....and watch what happens...she would beat the crap ... (Asked by jophelia)

LMAO... "age appropriate" is a No Child Left Behind buzzword that means big headaches for people trying to provide activities to developmentally delayed students that are appropriate to the student's needs, and a great deal of frustration, stress, and mental understimulation for the students/clients if organizations comply with it. In other words, we're supposed to bore them into growth, rather than stimulating their minds (if something is too difficult or advanced for your current level of skill/interest, it is boring). When I work with a 4th grader with a mental age of 0 to 12 months, I'm not supposed to work on ...(Answered by spedusource)

Many inventories require at least a fouth grade reading level. I know of two inventories that are reading free: The Reading-Free Vocational Interest Inventory (Becker, 2000) and The Wide Range Interest-Opinion Test (Jastak & Jastak, 1979). These inventories use line drawings to represent employment tasks, so they have a degree of abstraction that may make them unsuitable for some of your students. Hundreds of career exploration and career assessment programs use video and/or CD-ROM, including Careerware and many others. You may also want to do a search for Employability Skills Inventories. I have included a few links you may ...(Answered by )

1) Community access, taking public transit if possible. This can include selecting correct bus fare, appropriate behavior on the bus, identifying the proper bus stops, etc. If you take the bus to a shopping area, you can do some "window shopping" or make small purchases, including ordering meals at fast food outlets. (This is usually a favorite activity, and you can use picture communication cards for those who cannot express themselves verbally.) You can also go to the grocery store and make purchases. 2) Cooking projects. This is especially fun when the people involved ...(Answered by sonomanona)

You must go with the movie rating. I can't imagine your being able to show a movie with an R rating to any student younger than 18. Your school or school district must have guidelines. If you don't follow them your job may be at risk. Sorry. There must be other more age appropriate options....(Answered by Buckie)

A.
Technology simply is. Like feelings - technology is not inherently "appropriate / inappropriate". It's all in how it is applied. Again, like feelings, technology only becomes "inappropriate" if acted on or used in an inappropriate way. BTW - "appropriate/inappropriate" is a maddeningly ambiguous term. Who decides what is "appropriate/inappropriate". Be more precise....(Answered by Mary B)
