Borderline Asperger's Syndrome - good teaching techniques? I have a 9th grade student who has both borderline Asperger's symptoms and borderline schizophrenia symptoms. He is being seen by the counselor twice a week and a psychiatrist once a week. He still has bizarre outbursts in class that cause other kids to ostracize him. Anyone out there (teachers) who have any good techniques for dealing with the bizarre stuff? Ignoring works okay, to a point, but not great. ... (Asked by CatLady) |

| Difficult combination! I worked with a 14 yr old young man with Asperger's when I was therapist in a Sp. Ed. self-contained class for Severe Bhr Disorders. "Bill" had no outbursts, but did whatever he wanted to do or simply walked home during class. He rarely communicated verbally. Piaget's Pre-Concrete Cognitive stage worked well and I got him diagramming his behavioral patterns. He was particularly good at it. I used Wm. Glasser's Basic Human Emotional Needs (Belonging, Power, Freedom and Fun) as the goals of behavior. (All behavior is purposeful and to get ...(Answered by Martell) | |

Asperger's Syndrome? My 7 y/o son has been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome. Is there anyone in the same "boat"? I was hoping to connect with other parents to be (for lack of a better word) "pen pals" to ask questions, get advice, etc. Any help would be great! Thanks for answering. ... | I had been searching for information about Asperger’s Syndrome, and in a story from the BBC NEWS: http://news.bbc.co.uk/ go/pr/fr/-/2/hi/health/ 3380569.stm (I'm 'wrapping' the url because it's not appearing in whole on the preview - just select the whole thing, or key it in.) I read about this book: Prof Fitzgerald's book: In Autism and Creativity: Is There a Link Between Autism in Men and Exceptional Ability? I like the "exceptional ability" part! I believe that website linked to http://www.autism.org/asperger.html and then I worked backward to http://www.autism.org/overview.html I don’t have the URL but I believe this article was there ...(Answered by Rap K)

| Psychosis is a generic psychiatric term for a mental state in which thought and perception are severely impaired. Persons experiencing a psychotic episode may experience hallucinations, hold delusional beliefs (e.g., grandiose or paranoid delusions), demonstrate personality changes and exhibit disorganized thinking (see thought disorder). This is often accompanied by lack of insight into the unusual or bizarre nature of such behavior, difficulties with social interaction and impairments in carrying out the activities of daily living. A psychotic episode is often described as involving a "loss of contact with reality". However Autism and Asperger's Syndrome are NOT psychoses. They are pervasive developmental ...(Answered by adkwolf) | |

| I agree with the first two answers, and I would also recommend specific educational approaches to help your child maximize his/her potential. Since every child is different, these may or may not apply to your situation or work for you. I would encourage you to keep trying and find a system that works for you and your family. You may have already done so, but I would also recommend keeping in close contact with your child's teacher and school to make sure that he or she is getting the support needed. Hope this helps! - Recognize your child's strengths and ...(Answered by special-education-teacher) | |

When was Asperger's 'lumped in' with regular (Kanner's) autism? & what are the VERY LATEST autism rates? I suspect much of the rise in Autsism rates is from Asperger's added to the classification. And Aspergers is just the type of condition that I could see existing UNdiagnosed until public awareness increases and then the rate of Asperger's increases. Kannerism is likely to have been MISdiagnosed in previous years. About 30 years ago, strict "Kanner's" autism was at a rate of 1 out of every 2000. Now, the rates for Kannerism have maybe stayed about the same, or maybe doubled. The 1 out of every 166 is to include Asperger's & others in the spectrum. My point is, ... (Asked by leopardlady) |

Are there advantages to being formally diagnosed with Asperger's? My cousin suffers from Asperger's and his obsession with his hobbies prevent him from being able to concentrate enough on any given task to hold a job. He's legally an adult, however is child like in many ways - naive and socially inept. His parents (he lives at home) realize that he will have to make his own way in life eventually as they won't live forever. They would like to him employed, but barring that at least get some sort of gov't assistance to allow indepedent living. Would having a doctor formally diagnose Asperger's entitle him to some disability ... (Asked by LanceMiller77) |

| Yes, as the others have said, your cousin may qualify for assistance , but people with aspergers do not qualify for benefits like someone who has been diagnosed with mental retardation. They might live in a state which has job placement help though. My son has aspergers and I am a special ed teacher. I have been to many workshops and had hours and hours of training. I have heard over and over that the best thing I can do for my son is to find a way to channel his special interests into a ...(Answered by una won) | |

| Hi Caitlin, It's possible that you may have Asperger's syndrome, but there is no way that anyone on Yahoo Answers can give you the answer. Most of what you are describing sounds more like social anxiety disorder, which is a common disorder that can be treated, either with counselling, or if it is so severe that it is crippling, with medication. When people talk about "obsession" in people on the autism spectrum (and Asperger's is a type of autism), it means more than having a keen interest or a favorite subject. It is often a ...(Answered by sonomanona) | |

7 year old son w/ Asperger's and ADHD - team sports or no? He wants to play baseball; he has fine and gross motor difficulty. Do I let him and worry he won't be able to keep up with the typical kid's? He's too old for tee-ball... He just doesn't have the coordination, he's okay when I'm at home and we're in our yard because I'm patient and encouraging - worry about a team though. But isn't that part of being a kid is playing a sport of you want to? Suggestions? Any Asperger's teens: does coordination get better when you get older? He's only 7 right now. ... | My son had some problems also. Baseball and basketball were the only sports he had a lot of trouble with, but your son might be different of course. Our son is better at gymnastics, soccer, football, & tennis, and karate so he has played all those sports. He tried baseball and basketball but had such difficulty with those two that he just didn't enjoy it like the other sports. I think baseball takes a lot of coordination which can be difficult for those with fine & gross motor difficulty & my son did not have the desire & motivation to ...(Answered by Karen)
