Teachers, Can you help me? I have a BFA in Fine Art and have decided that I would be interested in teaching. I live in Georgia, if that helps anyone but I am not certified as a teacher. Any ideas on how I should proceed? I really don't want to go back to school if it can be avoided. I would be willing to go back at night and teach during the day maybe... Additionally, roughly what salary can be expected? Thanks for your help. ... (Asked by Charles Dexter Ward) |

| I don't know about Georgia, but in Texas, they have an alternative certification program where you can start teaching, and just go to either nights or weekend classes on education. You have to get observed a few times by the supervisor, but you can be teaching while you get your certification. Again, I don't know about Georgia, but I have 2 years experience and earn 36k in Texas. My first year it was 30k. There should be a state board of education or certification website. You could check it to find out the exact requirements....(Answered by DLM) | |

| 1.) Don't give everyone the same questions. For papers, don't give them the same assignment. For tests, you could intentionally stagger them so that adjacent students don't have the same questions. Alternatively, for multiple choice tests, give everyone the same question, but change up which letter corresponds to the correct choice. 2.) Be vigilant. There's no substitute for watching the students as they take the test. You may want to talk to your administrator and see if you can't use a hidden camera during tests. You may not be able use the footage against the students, but if they cheat once, ...(Answered by ³√carthagebrujah) | |

| I don't avoid answering them. If it seems like the question is from someone who doesn't have a good command of English I often try to figure out what the person is asking and attempt a response. If the question is about a serious issue I ignore spelling errors and focus on the more important problem. I realize that some people asking questions on here haven't necessarily had the advantage of a pretty good education, so I don't hold that against them. If the question is frivolous I do ignore it, but then I mostly ignore ...(Answered by Imaka) | |

| Avoid fighting in front of them. Don't do anything in front of them that you don't want them to do - smoke, drink, etc. They learn mostly by your actions, not your words. Never use force or violence or shouting to settle an issue. If you are separated or divorced from their other parent, never bad mouth that parent to them. Never prevent them from knowing their grandparents, unless there are very serious extenuating circumstances - it can't be just because you don't like the grandparents or don't get along with them. Teachers vs the Administration - Your thoughts? Over the years of my teaching, I've noticed that many faculty members assume the worst about any actions of the administration. In other words, there's an automatic, underlying distrust. I've never understood this. Thus I have always avoided the teacher's lounge areas in any school where I've taught. I've never seen any point in joining in the usual "gripe sessions" that nearly always seemed to be going on. (The gripe sessions weren't always about the administration, of course. Students were also a favorite topic.) I never thought all that negativity served any purpose. Do you feel you can ... (Asked by seadreamer164) |

| You've got the right attitude, but it's hard to find. I think a lot of schools have a hard time finding good administrators these days. I taught for five years, and always LOVED the people I worked with. I knew there were negative comments swirling about, and like you, I kept to myself and didn't join in the scoffing. If I didn't back the administration, I would find a different place to work. I quit teaching to get married and raise a family, or else I'd still be there. Loved it!...(Answered by daisykj) | |
