Is anyone bothered by the level of illiteracy in this country? I'm serious. Has anyone noticed how many people don't know the difference between "your" and "you're," and don't know that you NEVER pluralize something with an apostrophe? If we can't comprehend simple concepts like these, what business do we have insisting that people who immigrate to this country learn English? We can't even communicate in that language properly ourselves! ... (Asked by Bush Invented the Google) |

Why can't people be bothered to learn proper grammar and spelling? I also have a problem with people who make easy punctuation mistakes; I mean, don't they listen to their teachers in primary school? I know I'm not alone, but it's like apathy is killing our language! Btw, yes, I love "Eats, Shoots & Leaves"! Two Weeks' Notice is a good movie but WHERE are the editors who should've noticed it needs an apostrophe?!! ... (Asked by say_it_straight9) |

| I agree with you wholeheartedly, I think it has to be put down to laziness. I like to take pride in the way that I write, It may take a little longer and even though I'm sure that I have made no mistakes, it dose not hurt to use the "spell check" to make absolutely sure. Once again, those that don't take care are just plain lazy. Be like me, don't let it get to you. Good luck....(Answered by Crazy) | |

| It really annoys me when people have such terrible spelling that you have to really work at reading what they're trying to say. I mean, a few spelling errors here and there is fine, but it's not like there's two-year-olds on here! I totally agree with you!...(Answered by Lauren) | |

Is there anyone else who is sincerely bothered by the fact that Yahoo is called...Yahoo? It's a great site but I've always been bothered by the name. Does anyone know where the name yahoo originated. Did anyone ever say the word yahoo before the site came about? Thanks for such great answers, the word means crude or brutish person--no wonder I don't like the word!! Also, thanks for clarifying, it sounded like a made-up "Whoohoo", and I didn't know it was actually used as an exclamation commonly in real life. I appreciate that I now know some of the history behind the web site I use every day. :) ... (Asked by SugarFrog46) |

Is anyone else bothered by the trend on TV of pronouncing what should be "ure" and "oor" sounds as "ore"? I started noticing this months ago, and it's getting worse. For "tourist," they're saying "tOHrist;" for "during," "dOHring." I heard it first from reporters on newscasts, but now I'm also hearing it from the narrators of documentaries. I know our English is a living language and, as such, goes through periods of change. And how did it get so suddenly widespread? Did someone send out a pronunciation memo? ... (Asked by Texlady) |

| Well, you should have grown up when I did in New England, when such things were not only called soda and pop, but also "tonic," "fizz" and "Coke" as a term for any carbonated beverage. Yes, we should all be more precise with language. One of my pet peeves is "I could care less," when they actually mean "I could not care less."...(Answered by Wide Awake) | |
