Q.
How can we motivate high school students to become more interested in science and pursue careers in science?
There isn't a doubt that science is the future. There is nothing else more essential for the advancement of society in the long run. The only way America can remain at the top is if it's science and technology is the most advanced. The problem is, from my experiences in high school, it seems as if many students just don't seem to be interested or motivated to pursue careers in science. This problems is becoming ever more pressing, with other countries catching up to us economically, and now with grant cuts and research restrictions imposed by the US government. How ... What got me interested in science was how my teachers taught. They did many demonstrations, especialyin chemestry. My teacher exploded, lit on fire, or just did crazy experiments almost every day before and during classes. In my Biology classes we had lots of labs which i found to be a lot better than just lecture. She would lecture for like 15 min and then wed go back and work on labs. Found this to be so much more exciting, and got me excited to actually go to class because I never knew what to expect!...(Answered by daoutdoorsguy)

Q.
Careers after teaching EFL? Former TEFLers?
I'm pushing 30 years old. I recently received TEFL certification and have a BA. I probably won't do this as a 20 or 30 year career. Although I'm serious about it and want to be a good teacher while I AM teaching, I'm hoping that I will be able to use this experience to further my career in a different field later. Does anyone have advice on what fields or employers might see my English teaching positively? ... (Asked by mu)

Hi! Firstly, contrary to what people say, there is a lot of scope for progression within EFL - you can go on to become DoS (Director of Studies), Accommodation Manager etc within a large language school. You didn't really say what other fields you're interested in, but if sales is one of them, there are a lot of sales-y jobs in EFL too, eg. Account management (dealing with international companies to sell them your courses, mainly Business English) or co-ordinating the international agents, if your school is in an English-speaking country. Another field you could easily progress into is recruitment: in the ...(Answered by Brook)

Q.
careers helping children...?
What are some careers working with children other than becoming a teacher? I'm about finished with a 4 yr degree in Child Development and Family Studies. I'd love to go on and get my Master's but am trying to decide what field... I've always wanted to teach, but now I think I'm more interested in actually working one on one to help those that need a little extra help. Does anyone know anything about school counseling/social work or careers similar? ... (Asked by littlemissunshine)

You would probably have to do counseling in a setting other than a school. Almost all states require that school counselors teach for at least three years in order to receive their counseling certification. The only other areas that I can think of that may not require teaching experience would be in more specialized situations such as treatment or juvenile detention facilities or actual social work (children's protective services). My mom was a social worker for about 10 years. It's a very demanding job and you may have to work a lot of on-call hours. (Going to the ER in cases of ...(Answered by Monica K)

I have been teaching middle school/high school for 5 years now, and I am getting frustrated with all the cut backs. Next year I will be down from .8 of full time, to .5. I would look at educational publishing... tons of opportunity there. Among the different positions: Sales - lots of traveling and great commissions (If you are single, this one is fun!) Educational consultant - work with school districts to implement new textbook/software, train teachers to use the product effectively (These positions involve lots of travel as well.) Curriculum specialist - help align, write new curriculum (This is what I was doing before I went back into the classroom this year. Loved it! I worked for Pearson Digital. Sent in my resume on a whim, got the job and moved to AZ. I didn't ...(Answered by Monica K)

Teaching Careers in the US?
I'm looking for any advice on teaching within the college system in the USA. I'm hoping to begin my Masters soon, and would ideally like a career in the US as my girlfriend lives there. Basically, is there anyone out there that can offer advice on requirements for teaching in the US, particularly at a college level. Are there any particular requirements based on State (as my girlfriend lives in California)? Any advice from someone with experience in this field would be helpful. ... (Asked by mondo_kane)

Master's degrees generally only allow you to teach at the community college level, although that's a great place to start (while you obtain your Phd). Most colleges require a Phd, as well as a commitment to continue publishing works related to your field. The requirements are generally more school specific, rather than state specific, since there are so many private institutions. Good luck....(Answered by ishotvoltron)

This is a good question. I'm in the same boat. It's difficult to find a career that's related to education but not still education. Depending on where you live, look at educational supply companies, textbook publishers, your LEA central office, your state department of instruction ... those are some ideas that will keep you in education but not still teaching....(Answered by Helper)

It really depends on what state you live in. In most states, besides a bachelor's degree, you also need to be certified by the state. After your college program is complete, and you have completed a student teaching assignment, you will most likely have to take your states certification test. Here in Connecticut, we have to take the Praxis tests. After you pass the test, you are then certified and can begin looking for a job. However, I recommend getting your master's degree (Which you have to get anyway) before you begin your career. Once you ...(Answered by fenway77)
