A.
You are correct. It should be a comma. Semi-colon use, generally, is reserved for separating two independent clauses. In plain english, that means if you have both a subject and a verb on both sides, use a semi-colon to separate them. In plainer english, if you use a semi-colon, each part must make sense on its own. In your example, "In the future" is not an independent clause (it doesn't make sense by itself), so you use a comma. The other main use of semi-colons is between longer lists of items, or lists of mulitple items, ...(Answered by Walsh Fam)

A.
Comma is not merely fine, but essential. A semi-colon would be used if you had two complete sentences. Instead you have a descriptive phrase (beginning with "discriminating"), which is merely clarifying but not necessary. "Taste functions as a primary checkpoint in the evaluation of substances to be ingested" is a complete sentence by itself, so the clarifying phrase takes a comma....(Answered by garypopkin)

Help with colon vs comma vs semi colon trouble?
After a few games, I realized that whenever the ball crossed the mid-line to our side of the field, the defense(?)stoppers, sweepers, and fullbacks(?) would always move up towards the ball leaving the goal almost completely open. Do I need commas for an appositive here or do I need a colon or semi colon. Please give a rule if it applies. Thank you for the suggestions especially Kiki and feral black gryphon. This was in the essay of a seventh grade student. I believe both your answers are correct and personally I would use the dashes because it reduces confusion. I ... (Asked by Elizabeth)

After a few games, I realized that whenever the ball crossed the mid-line to our side of the field, the defense--stoppers, sweepers, and fullbacks--would always move up toward the ball, leaving the goal almost completely open. I like the use of dashes here. You could use commas if the titles of the positions are considered extra information. However, with already having a comma before the defense and with having commas due to the positions being items in a series, it might become cumbersome. Please note the comma after ball. A colon can be used to basically say ...(Answered by Kiki)

I agree with Sleepwalker; a colon would be unnecessary in the example you gave. However, if the sentence were constructed differently, it would be quite correct to put a colon after a verb. Example: "These are the items I need: eggs, flour and sugar."...(Answered by saberlingo)
