Id say this is because of a few reasons. 1. The books are sometimes wrong. 2. The teacher doesn't do his/her own research. 3. Teacher doesn't know any better. I, over the years, because I eat, breathe, and live history, have come to notice these myths and my bellstarter is to actually write a myth and the fact about it. The one about Columbus is tricky. He didn't get to America 1st (it was probably the Vikings circa 1000CE) but he was the 1st to come back and spread the news of his discovery to the masses. Since ithe Italians have Columbus day as an official holiday why not Copernicus day for the Polish/Americans? After all, all Columbus supposedly did was discover America,but COPERNICUS discovered the correct configuration for the entire Solar System we all live in! In other words they used to believe the Earth was the center and the Sun and everything revolved around it and now they know the truth! The Sun is the center and the Earth is no different than any other planet orbiting it! We need another national holiday! The big question is when to place it! As a teacher How do handle so many days off? Presidents day, mlk day, columbus day, spring break, summer break, christmas break and every dang weekend. Congrees works more than that. Let's see. . .I used today to create 3 webquests, and put together my classroom webpage. When I was done, I choreographed a routine for the high school flag squad that I coach. This week, I will have flag practice each morning for an hour before school begins, conditioning 3 days after school for 1 hour, and rehearsal 3 days for an additional hour. Most of our history is a fairy tale. Just like Plymouth Rock. Thousands of people go to see it every year and it is not even the right rock. Out of curiosity, where did you get this idea? The Catholic Church never officially taught "flat earth" theory. There may have been some cleric some place and somewhere that taught this, but never the Church. The understanding of the earth being round comes out of Greek antiquity and they had calculated (quite accurately I might add) the circumference of the earth. The clerics who were educated in the classical studies (as was the case in the medieval schools) knew this. The understanding of "flat earth" comes out of the myths of antiquity.
