| It's Latin, it means something like 'one Europe'. As far as historical connotations go, the Latin isn't accidental. | Ambrose Bierce, an American satirist, wrote a book called "The Devil's Dictionary" - nothing to do with religion or Satanism, just a very cynical look at the world. In it, he defined marriage as being "an institution consisting of a master, a mistress and two slaves - making in all two". So some people are probably quoting from that, without realising it. The phrase is also used to suggest that marrriage forms a firm basis for one's life, though - so I suspect it depends who's saying it....(Answered by Valerie Ann) | |
