Albert Bandura (behaviourist) (bobo doll studies): Children learn about social behaviour by: • Watching other people – (observational learning) • Imitating other people • Doing something they take pleasure in (intrinsic reinforcement). This will cause them to repeat an activity behaviour. Banduras key ideas: • Children model themselves on adults that are present in their lives • Children’s thought processes are affected by their age Burrhus Skinner (behaviourist) (operant conditioning): Skinner experimented on rats and pigeons. He used his concepts of positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement to shape the animals behaviour. For example, he fed them if they did as he required. However he punished them with an electric ...(Answered by pebbles_panda)

Q.
Why do US high school students choose to be disruptive in class?
The high school students know the consequences, but yet they continue to choose the disruptive paths. Do the students still need that attention to prove their self-worth? Do the students find it more rewarding with the consequences? What gains do the students feel like they are getting by getting into trouble? Does it make the students feel better to be in trouble? Is the classroom discipline and structure so unbearable that disruption is the only way out? Are the US students too spoiled with too many choices? Should students be offered less choices? What are the ... (Asked by MathMaestro)

Hi, as a high school history teacher, I have a lot of experience in this subject. All of your questions are partial answers. Every answerer so far is also right. It's for attention, humor, boredom, etc. There are other reasons as well: Far too many kids are ignored or neglected by the adults in their lives. For many, acting out is not only a way to get attention, it's the only way they know how to interact with adults. For some it's a cry for help. Many of my students have parents who are chemically dependent, incarcerated, or both. Many have been sent ...(Answered by Snance)

Education post-Master's direction crossroads. Suggestions/ ideas?
I am finishing my Master's degree in Education and still have the itch for more schooling. Problem is, I don't see other things that look good to me as I look around at other education fields. I love being in the classroom, and I love working with the kids, yet I have this idea that I should be moving up into something else, especially with more education. So the question is, what non-administration paths are there to pursue? What would be the pros/cons? For reference, I've considered teaching at the college level, but many profs ... I was in your same situation. I received my master's degree in Career and Technical education at the University of Wisconsin - Stout, and still wanted more schooling. I decided to pursue a degree that lies in rank between the Masters and the PHD: the Ed.S., or Education Specialist Degree. I got a teaching job at a technical college, and I pursue my degree part-time. It's great! Check out http://www.uwstout.edu/programs/edscte/...(Answered by )

Q.
How can teachers deal with students (in a constructive way) who frequently talk back and argue?
I have an 11-year-old student who talks back and argues against almost anything he is asked to do. In his eyes he is never wrong. This student also instigates conflict with his peers. He always has an excuse ready for every conflict or infraction of rules. Theses excuses are usually transparent, but are well-thought out and make it hard to pin consequences. How can I get him to realize that it is just easier to be less resistant, to follow rules and be respectful? ... (Asked by Corey H)

Wow, we could be dealing with the same exact student... what makes it more difficult is that my student's mom thinks that he can do no wrong. Basically, I pulled him aside, very non-confrontational, and asked him what he had to gain by being argumentative and disrespectful. Then we talked about how his behavior has an effect on the classroom environment. What would happen if everyone questioned the rules and argued with the teacher?Of course, he knows that other students couldn't stand him and asked him to think about that as well. We finally agreed that it is okay to question but ...(Answered by Monica K)

Q.
Am I too intense at work? I make people cry sometimes.?
I work hard and fast and am very exact about my work (making costumes for theatre), I have a low tolerance for bad work or people who don't care about their work, and while I don't bitch anyone out, I do politely point out to them how they could make it better. Sometimes this makes people cry, which makes me feel awful, but I don't really think I've done anything wrong. I work with a number of people who are basically interns / students, and I am an educator - I feel like constructive criticism is absolutely neccessary ... (Asked by fortinbrasmonkey)

Sounds like you are starting out pointing out the good and then constructively "critiquing" (better word than criticizing) their work. If that's how you are doing it, the students that are crying really need to grow up before they get into the real world... Your method is fine in my opinion....(Answered by Just Me)

Ummm... It's not very correct, grammatically... Also, I would make a reference to a theory such as Bloom's taxonomy. According to Bloom, there are six different types of questions, some of which require more advanced critical thinking skills than others. Ok this is not about which is best but might help a little. I did an intensive TEFL course with the second part being distance learning. I now teach in Germany and although the qualification was useful to actually get a job I think it would have been so much better to do a 1 month course for practical experience. I have been told there is a really good month long course in Prague but cant give any more details. Definatly look into International House- they can help you get good jobs afterwards...Best of luck...teaching can be really rewarding...(Answered by meowser)

My mother makes me lose confidence as a future teacher...?
My mom is a teacher and I am in the process of finishing school to become one. (My dad and my stepmother are also teachers.) I have never had a lot of confidence in myself, especially in the classroom. My mom keeps giving me conflicting responses: I feel like sometimes she humors me when I talk about teaching...she says, "Oh...you'll be fine..." and brushes me off. Other times she tells me that I could NEVER handle her kids. Why is she watching me go to school to become a teacher if she thinks that I couldn't handle her students? She ... (Asked by justdanknee)

Being a teacher is never an easy thing to do... it comes with experience... no one really knows how well they're going to do. The best way to find out is do not listen to negative comments from anyone, if it's in your heart to become a teacher, then follow your heart. If you do your job with passion, you'll succeed. Good luck, I feel confident that you will be a great teacher. If we all listened to negative feedback from others, we wouldn't accomplish anything.... I say GO FOR IT ALL THE WAY!...(Answered by Dee)

Can you recommend any job(s) that someone who was a high school math teacher might enjoy and make OK money at?
I am currently a high school math teacher (in my 3rd year), and am highly considering a new career path. I have an engineering background, but do not really want to take that route again. Do you know of any career suggestions based on your own experiences? Do you know anyone who left teaching for another career and is enjoying it? What is that field? I admit that teaching is tough to beat because you get a lot of time off, and the money to me is all right. It just turned out to be not ... (Asked by isctg)
