book quote..? can somebody help me analyze this quote? it is from the book THE BLUEST EYES by toni morrison "In equating physical beauty with virtue, she stripped her mind, bound it, and collected self-contempt by the heap....She was never able, after her education in the movies, to look at a face and not assign it some category in the scale of absolute beauty, and the scale was one she absorbed in full from the silver screen." pg. 122 thank you, much appreciated. ... | Physical beauty isn't virtue; it's a happenstance of nature. By thinking that beauty equals virtue, she locked herself into one concept (stripped her mind and bound it). Now every time she looks at someone, she doesn't see that person for what he or she is, but can only think of that person as a leading man or a character actor or the comic relief. The self-contempt comes from never measuring up to the artificial beauty created by Hollywood. This is like girls looking at the models in magazines and thinking they're fat or they're ugly. ...(Answered by daeve930)

Many people claim that our liberty is still safe; dose that in turn mean these quotes are incorrect? "Educate and inform the whole mass of the people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty." -Thomas Jefferson- With all do respect we as a society are not well educated to how and why things work. Apathy and pessimism drives contempt. "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty; power is ever stealing from the many to the few." -Wendell Phillips- Most of my generation thinks civics are good cars. If perused they might say that they vote therefore they have met there civic duty "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing" -Edmund Burke- ... | these quotes are quite correct and the problem with those who claim our liberty is safe - is that they make it unsafe in their complacency the quote from wendell phillips is the most telling "Eternal Vigilance is the price of liberty" and he was so right and voting while VERY important is only ONE aspect of that vigilance- our civic duty is more than that much much more. we must be involved in and with our government in order for it and our way of life to survive...(Answered by cometkatt)

Can someone tells me what this means in easy terms? Diogenes was chief among the school known as the cynics, though possibly not representative of it [Diogenes "carried the principles of the sect to an extreme of asceticism." (OED.)]. It was said of Diogenes that throughout his life he "searched with a lantern in the daylight for an honest man." And though Diogenes apparently did not find an honest man, he had, in the process, "exposed the vanity and selfishness of man." (Chambers.) The sect, known as the cynics, was founded by Antisthenes (444-370 BC), a pupil of Socrates; it was "marked by an ostentatious contempt for ease, wealth, and the ... (Asked by summerdaze) |

| Diogenes was the most cynical person, but he wasn't the best representation of the cynics. He tried as hard at he could to find an honest man (and even though he didn't) along the way he uncovered how evil most men are. Antisthenes (a pupil of socrates) founded the cynics as a group which was opposed to enjoying the enjoyable things in life. Diogenes joined the cynics and trained under Antishenes. Eventually he rejected all luxuries of life (good clothing/food/furniture) (what cynisim means to day is: somebody who looks more for bad than for good. And when he finds the bad, ...(Answered by DonSoze) | |

| In a nutshell, we all have our own culture whether it be defined ethnically, racially, linguistically, occupationally, and etc. By preserving our culture, we are not despising or disrespecting another culture. According to Webster culture is shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization. Therefore, by preserving one's language, traditions, values, goals and the like, one is not negatively impacting other cultures. However, Chavez assertion is highly debatable. For instance, did Hitler's so called preservation of pure Germanic culture contempt or disrespect the Jewish, Gypsy and Homosexual cultures? You bet it did. On the other hand, ...(Answered by eduKate) | |

| This probably is your homework, so you only get a starting point here. What he means is that keeping one's customs, traditions and in some cases language is not looking down at anyone else's culture, especially if one now lives in a place where theirs is not the dominant culture. In the case of immigrants (legal or otherwise)living in America, it means that while we should expect them to assimilate into our society (for example, by learning enough English so that they can eventually function without needing a translator or bilingual signs...that's probably the major way), we ...(Answered by rl_ex06) | |

| My guess is that they are speakng in generalizations. Most Native American Cultures has passed on to their children moral and ethical values within their own culture such as respect for the earth, family, elders. They are taught to respect what the earth has to offer and not become a part of conspicuous consumption whereas for the majority of "white", though they may value the thought of those principals, they do not practice it. They give in to consumption without thought of reprisal. Because of factors of greed, money etc rather than basic needs to live, ...(Answered by kathleen) | |
