Q.
Student Loans - what happens when they are sold to another company?
I'm looking for a consolidation loan. There are so many companies out there. I heard that some of the companies with great promotional interest rate discounts (e.g. for on-time payments, enroling in auto debit etc.) turn around and sell your loan to another company. When this happens, do the terms have to remain the same as the original consolidated loan (ie interest rate, payment schedule etc.)? I'm hearing mixed things about this. I contacted the Federal Student Loan information center and was told conflicting things as well. ... (Asked by Sarah)

The "incentives" that lenders offer you to get you to consolidate are always subject to change, although most lenders will not do this because they want to keep your business. Typically if a loan is sold all of the terms will remain the same (the interest rate without any incentives has to stay the same). It is possible that they can change, but very unlikely. In the 2 years that I have worked for a student loan servicer and seen many lender sales I have never seen somebody lose an incentive only because of that. If ...(Answered by marebear31485)

What kind of discounts? Grocery, utilities, housing, all of the above. What state are you in? I would go to your local Welfare office, ask about food stamps, low cost housing ,medical insurance. Check out Graduate Leverage. Theses guys are really chill, they give you unbiased rates for consol of all lenders and then show you which one is the best deal. Even if its not with them. They are founded and run by students and honest more than anything. Especially, given, you know with all the mass selling you see everywhere on incentives, these give you a hot incentive. My personal incentive from them was 1% after 17months and 0.25 auto payment credit. And oh yeah, Customer service, something i thought i would never say ever for any company, is excellent...(Answered by Z-Money)

The reason they call them "Student Advantage Discount cards" is because they're for students! If you're not a student, then you can't get one. Hopefully any business will ask you for your student i.d., because I'm sure that lots of kids try to pass themselve off as students when they aren't. What's "poor" have to do with anything?...(Answered by ezkiss)

I'm going to assume this is in the U.S.; if not, this doesn't apply. At a school such as you specify, all students are considered off-campus, and the school will list a cost of attendance which takes this into account. This will mean that they can offer you more financial aid, including grants and loans, than they could if you were on campus and had a lower cost of attendance. It's not common for there to be specifically education-related aid for housing (since the housing cost is included in general financial aid calculations). I hope you have asked ...(Answered by Grammar=Fun)
