If I was no longer supported by my parents, could I get more financial aide for college? I am 19 and about to finish my first year at a private college in Illinois. My dad recently lost his job, and my parents can no longer afford to help me pay for my education. I've heard of other students who get a lot of student aid because they are no longer supported by their parents (emancipate - but they are not minors, so I don't know if there is a special term). Can anyone (financial aid counselor out there?!) provide any help on this subject? Thanks. My parents will not claim me if it will ... (Asked by Josh K) |

| The problem with the entire financial aide world is that it is all based on tax returns and place of residence. Your parents 2006 tax returns is what is taken into account when you apply for Financial Aide (FAFSA). If your parents were making any kind of money in 2006 that is what they will look at. You have to be out of your parents house for a year to no longer have to claim their income on your FAFSA form. I know a lot of people who have had this problem, besides what the government ...(Answered by Jennifer F) | |

How could I get more financial aid for college? My situation: I am graduating from college in December 2006. For the past 3.5 years I have paid for college by myself with absoluutly no assistance from my parents. All loans were in my name only. My parents went bankrupt about a year and a half ago, and my total college bills will be around $65k. I know there are tons of kids at my school that go there for almost nothing... I was wondering since I was 22 years old, and the emancipated minor process probably won't work; was there anything else my parents could claim for me? ... (Asked by justin m) |

| You need to start by completing a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Because you are under 25, you will include your parents' tax information from 2005 as well as your own. Since they went bankrupt, they probably did not earn a whole lot last year. The amount you and your parents are expected to contribute to your education is determined by the information provided on the FAFSA. The Expected Family Contribution (EFC) is given on the Student Aid Report (SAR). The EFC is more or less a dollar amount; so the lower the number, the less you are expected ...(Answered by Merries) | |

| Absolutely, if your child can prove his status as indepentent, meaning he filed taxes as a single person, then he is not subject (generally) to the parents income reflecting on his EFC (earned family contribution). This is the amount of money, determined by filling the FAFSA, which the student is required to be able to come up with himself. For example, your childs EFC would lower significantly if his income is close to 0 and he can claim independent. If he is dependent status, then he has to report your income, which would in effect raise his ...(Answered by ) | |

| There are tons of scholarships that go unclaimed each year. Many $400, $500 or $1000 scholarships never even get applied for because people think it's chump change and not worth applying for. Well, get a few of those $500 scholarships and it'll really make a dent in your tuition bill. | Being granted an "emancipation" from your parents by the state won't automatically make you eligible to receive Federal Student Aid as an independent student. However, it sounds like you are a good candidate for a Dependency Override, which is an override that only your Financial Aid Office can perform. Here's how the override works: Technically, you can't be considered independent unless ... * you are 24 or older * you are married * you have dependents other than a spouse * you are a veteran of the US armed forces * you are an orphan or ward of the court * you are pursuing an ...(Answered by FinAidGrrl) | |

FASFA, Financial Aid? So here is the deal. Last year was the second year I applied for the Fafsa, but they never get back to me. I think it might have to do with the fact that Neither of my parents have jobs, and I was on my own at age 18, but never emancipated, and I paid for everything. I was told by a a school counselor to then leave them blank. so last year, I ended up paying cash for my classes. What are you supposed to put, if you don't speak to either of your parents? Technically it says, that ... (Asked by Karen) |

| I've struggled with them, but they responded. I was not eligible because I was not Independent. Back then the stipulations to be independent were: 25 years or older Be a veteran a Ward of the Court or an orphan Be married or have Children. I wrote them a long letter stating why I was independent and how my parents were not financial responsible for me. They denied my application. The age has now dropped from 25 to 23 years old. They should have at least sent a letter of denial. I would encourage you to contact them or ask a counselor at the school to assist you. The ...(Answered by Erica) | |
