"Quit while you're ahead" refers to a situation that you ultimately either cannot or are very unlikely to win. "Being ahead" does not constitute "winning" the whole of the game being considered. You've made the best of the situation by quitting, but you haven't won, and quitting where that gives you most benefit doesn't make you a quitter - this refers to somebody who pulls out when the effort to get the reward seems to hard, rather than when the odds are against them. Therefore "quitting while you're ahead" does not conflict with either of the two initial hypotheses....(Answered by kirun)
