gifted students (or parents of gifted students) - please answer? i am wondering how gifted students feel about acceleration... so here it is. if you are an identified gifted student, have you been accelerated? if you have, how do you feel about it? do you like the idea? i'm researching the topic because i'm getting a degree in education, so i know all the reasons for and against it. what my research hasn't uncovered (yet, anyway) is what the students themselves feel about being accelerated. as opposed to other options. that's why i'm asking. ... | check out the book "Genius Denied" it's a different look at acceleration. I have not read many negatives from students or parents who were accelerated. I've done alot of research regarding my daughter. The only bad side about acceleration in my mind is that some students require "Radical" (more than 2 yrs) acceleration. Especially in the elementary years, gifted students learn rapidly and most can complete all elementary school work by 2nd or 3rd grade. So to accomodate these students, it requires more than just a grade skip. I would imagine this multi-grade skip would be ...(Answered by theresa4104)

Is Being Gifted A Disability? My child is gifted and ADHD. He is one grade ahead in school and is enrolled in college prep school. Because of ADHD, he doesn't do all his work, which keeps his grades down. He takes ADHD medication, is involved in therapy for depression ( which he has always had in some form or other) and plays soccer. He could qualify for disability but i have resisted it because i don't want it to trip him up in the future. I have avoided IEP for same reason. Is there anything more i can do for this child? ... | Giftedness is a disability in some states. The reason giftedness can be considered a disability should be apparent to you as you deal with the issues every day. Should you label your child gifted? You have to decide if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. You need to gather as much information as possible to make this decision. Looking at the bell curve, gifted people are as far off of the "norm" as the severely retarded. Giftedness often comes with learning disabilities, depression, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), or ADD. The gifted tend to have difficulty conforming to social norms because they can ...(Answered by acornfullfilled)

| There's a lot of reasoning involved in IQ tests. Some memory, as well. If you do a lot of word-search or logic puzzles, it might be easier, but you shouldn't stress about it. Get lots of sleep and simply try to do your best. You can go to http://www.emode.com and take an online IQ test - there are several. An IQ score is simply measuring that you did well on a test. As one gets older, it gets harder and harder to score very high on the test - because the questions are puzzles that older people have ...(Answered by John T) | |

Gifted and talented education programs? How far should gifted and talented programs go? Should children be separated by ability level? If they are already separated out for some supplemental education, should more benefit be provided by these supplemental programs.... such as a higher level class? There are pros and cons to the separation of different ability levels. From the perspective of a gifted student who was only partially separated out about once a week, I believe the all or nothing approach is better. In fact, I think being separated by ability levels help the students to perform at their own pace, and not get rediculous notions ... (Asked by peachfuzz) |

| Gifted programs (having been in an excellent one) provide numerous benefits, but must be handled delicately. The most glaring positive aspect is the education. You are with students of your own intelligence level (or at least same IQ) and are able to learn at a faster pace; usually at a higher grade level as well. Few public schools would be willing to accommodate these students by sending them to public high schools for math/science (particularly, as the programs emphasize these as a general rule). I learned an unbelievable amount and the courses were sufficiently challenging and fast-paced. ...(Answered by Aegor R) | |

Any other gifted teens? Heyy I am 13 years old and participate in my school's gifted program (not to brag). Sometimes I feel like I am an outcast because of this. I even surpass most of the other kids in gifted. I take all advanced classes, including algebra 1 which is 2 years above my grade level, and I am still bored in school. Is there anyone else out there who has the same problem? Do you have any tips? ... (Asked by LiVe LaUgH lOVe) |

Is the term "gifted" overused in education? Whenever I seek advice on educating my "gifted" son (reading and knows numbers to 1000 at age 3), I get responses like "all kids are gifted" and "my child is gifted too." How can I get real advice on this topic without offending anyone? Is there another way to describe his needs without using the term "gifted"? ... (Asked by Linda R) |

| As a teacher we found that there was a certain stigma associated with the term gifted. A widely used term is accelerated or academically accelerated. This conveys the idea of your child being advanced without making others feel as if their child is not special. Truly all children are gifted in one way or another. Using this term will give you the capability of getting the advice and answers that you seek without offending anyone....(Answered by inca owner) | |

| I'm guessing you're British just because you mention that the government actually invests in gifted education! I'm American and would love to see state support like that here, but I'm not holding my breath. I do however have a friend whose son is in a similar situation to your daughter's. She made the decision to pull him out of school for this year only and educate him at home. He has been thriving. He has always been a shy and diffident boy, and this experience seems to have given him the scope to learn in the way that is best ...(Answered by Leslie D) | |

Do gifted children have explicit legal rights to an accelerated education in Texas? My 4 year old son is very bright, but his teacher bases her pre-kindergarten curriculum on how fast the slowest child learns. For example, they are only working on letter recognition, but he can already read. He becomes very bored in class and has been acting out. I have read the Texas Educational Agengy's Parent's Rights Guide, but I can't seem to find any reference to gifted youngsters. My questions are: Do pre-k children have the explicit right to assessment testing? Do they have the explicit right to an accelerated education if it is deemed necessary by assessment testing? There are ... (Asked by sroozib) |

| Speaking from experience (I am a teacher) this prek teacher should have centers that help ALL children, not just the slower learners. If your child already knows how to read or different things then she should be offering him different activities to further his own knowledge. But I digress. First of all, you don't know whether your child is or isn't gifted unless he's been tested. So, first of all I'd recommend, asking when and if they can do a gifted screening. Just because your child can read at age four does not mean he's gifted..many children ...(Answered by bitto luv) | |
