What to do with a loft in a Montessori preschool classroom? It is my first year teaching preschool. I have a Montessori 3-5 preschool classroom witha loft that drives me nuts. Right now I have it be a "quiet area" but the kids go up there and do everything but be quiet. They take all the books out. Hide under the table. Stack the bean bags on top of each other. One suggestion I got is turn it into a cultural area. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I need an idea that is Montessori based and will give the classroom order and structure. ... My son is shy at preschool - should I take him out of it? He is so excited to go and talks about it all the time. When we are there, he demands I stay, or my husband. He hides most of the time. I tell him that we don't have to go back, but he wants to. I am worried that the teacher will ask him not to come back. Should I take him out of it or his effort to go is all that matters and being shy is something we have to work on? ... (Asked by HELPMYBOREDOM) |

| You need to stick with it. Ask his teacher how long he usually is upset after you do leave. My three-year-old acted like the world was crashing down around him when I dropped him off, and I found out later that he's fine before I even have time to get out of the parking lot. The thing is, most kids "put on a show" for you, in a way. It can make it VERY stressful on the parents, but the kids probably don't even remember having been upset after an hour. Almost all preschools and daycares have absolutely no ...(Answered by Mandy S) | |

Did anyone else notice these stereotypes in Higglytown Heros? First off, the two African American kids don't have a dad. The hispanic kid's dad runs a hot dog stand. The only girl comes up with plans that are both mathmatically and scientifically unsound hence promoting that women are bad at math and science. Also when everyone gets scared they all hide inside the WHITE MALE. What is up with that? ... (Asked by parkdad73) |

What can I do to correct conduct when the pre-schooler won't listen? I currently have a child with speech problems that is very violent. He understands that what he is doing is wrong because he either hides or covers his ears. The problem is in hitting other children and respecting authority. The hitting ranges to mild from violent and he throws amazing tantrums when reprimanded. The child age 4, comes from a divorced family and lives with his newly wed father. He's knows of the problem but the conduct persists, what can be done? ... (Asked by Naty!!!) |

| I think most of what you need to do needs to happen before the behaviors occur. Make sure you are preteaching the 'rules' that you expect. Make sure you are using positive statements (e.g. 'hands down' as opposed to 'don't hit'). I have 3 rules in my prek behavior class...be safe, be friendly, and be a worker. do not use a lot of language, and keep it simple. All behavior has a function, and it would help to try to figure out what the function is...to get out of doing something (speech), to get attention, ...(Answered by prekinpdx) | |

I'm having some difficulty with my 4 year old, who keeps running out of his class. What do I do to help him? My son is 4 years old and he's in Pre-K, and goes all day. He leaves the classroom and lunchroom, runs away from the teachers, hides under chairs and generally will not follow the rules or instructions. He's even run outside before they could catch him. He throws fits, screams and cries, and even throws himself on the floor in his "hissy fits" when he doesn't want to do something or doesn't get his way. They (the school ... teachers and principals) are already near their wits ends with him, and are suggesting that he has "problems" and are wanting ... (Asked by nsphatgurl) |

| I have a child that has been diagnosed with Autism and ADHD. He was enrolled in the public school's preschool program at the age of 3. He is now 7 and starting his 5th year of public school. His first 3 years were in resource classes (special ed), but his kindergarten, and now his 1st grade years, have been in mainstream classrooms. And, since the beginning, he's gone full days. Over the years of preschool, I saw alot of children in those classes with various diagnoses. Some extreme, some subtle. And, I witnessed children that just couldn't "conform" to what ...(Answered by Proverbs31Mom) | |

| The hidden curriculum refers to all of the social nuances involved in attending school (or other environments) a child may be interacting in. In special education, this refers to subjects that typically are not taught to "typically developing" children because they can pick up on these special rules themselves through interactions. People with cognitive disabilities (such as mental retardation, autism) typically have a more difficult time picking up on these small clues because they lack the awareness of others. These kinds of social rules may be: cliques, what halls they are allowed to walk through, talking out ...(Answered by dolphin mama) | |
