Q.
How long should I take to read a 30 page chapter in a us history textbook?
I usually take about 1 and a half to two hours to read 30 pages while highlighting at the same time. Is that too slow? Any suggestions to speed up my reading while fully or almost fully understanding the material? ... (Asked by texanpride)

I like to browse through the pages until I find something interesting. If its good, I'll read the info just before it to get a better idea. Just keep track of what you've read and take breaks often. If I don't have time to browse, I'll read until my mind starts to wander. I'll use a pencil to mark which page and sentence I last clearly remembered reading....(Answered by Momo <momo5j7>)

Q.
Tackling school bullying?
As some one who was bullied till the second year at high school, I know what it feels like to dread arriving at school. To feel the absolute misery of spending breaks and lunch wandering round alone, avoiding certain students. It wasn't character builiding. A nightmare. I had to wait till I grew another foot taller before it stopped. That it's still allowed to go on today unchecked, and is only highlighted when some poor kid (or even their mother as was recently the case!) tops themself, is a sad indictment. Some (not all!) parents seem to be alright with ... (Asked by bugaboo)

After having suffered years of abuse from one girl, but not reporting it (although I am sure the teachers must have been aware) this girl went to our head of year and accused me of bullying, because I had made a few bitchy comments back. When I told people what had happened their jaws dropped - they all knew the other girl was lying, but the head of year, being new, neither knew nor cared about the previous situation. We need to get those who are really the bullies, rather than those who are just accused of bullying, to be ...(Answered by Helena)

there u go: Bill Gates Speech to High School..A MUST READ & SAVE!!! Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! To anyone with kids of any age, here's some advice. Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world. Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used ...(Answered by www.Razackonline.com)

Boy thats a toss up. They both have proximity to lower income areas which, ultimately have an effect on the quality of the public education. Of course, today, the houses in the lower income areas cost about $800k. I'd say these days, its going to be about even. Heres some stats to help you decide: Aragon: 1565 students - expenditures per student: $13,794. Teacher/student ratio: 22.2 to 1. Caucasion: 48.31%, African American: 1.66%, Asian: 34.19%, Hispanic: 15.53%, Native American: 0.32%. San Mateo: 1375 ...(Answered by Cornporto)

Q.
How to deal with a co-worker?
I'm a teacher and I'm having difficulty with a co-worker. Her teaching methods are antiquated and she is constantly pointing out the faults of my special needs students. All of this singling out has made the other children not want to interact with my two students. They are often quite mean to them. I've spoken to her, her principal, and other staff members on how to better engage the children. I'm trying to take a positive and proactive plan by modeling appropriate behavior, highlighting her strengths, giving her input on our behavioral interventions, etc. ... (Asked by lolabellaquin)

It appears you have been very professional in dealing with this - good on you! Do you belong to a professional organization of teachers? They should be able to provide more support. Interpersonal relationship advice.....why does she have any power over your students? You've done very well in modelling appropriate behaviour - good on you! Is there another teacher who could give your students peer partners? That would give another opportunity for appropriate modelling. Ask her students about their motivation: What do they get from being mean to the girls? Until you understand ...(Answered by SWF)

Don't worry, those schools are known for the high quality curriculum and variety of afterschool activities. What is also important, they help to establish your social network, future connections. This may seem not that important now, when you are 15, but, beleive me, a few years later, when looking for your first job, you'll see the meaning. The best (and most expensive - about CHF35K/year) boarding school in Switzerland is Institut am Rosenberg. Good luck!...(Answered by Crastane)

What things are important to school-age children and teenagers?
I'm writing an essay on lack of values in schools. I'm looking for examples. My 9 year old wants friends that don't suck, to be a veterinarian, to skip a grade, to get more dogs, and to play more hockey. She's a smart hockey playing dog lover, but I think generally it is all the same. Kids want what their friends have, want friends that are generally seen as cool [or interesting], and hate to be bored. The kids that have everything want more of the same [just more expensive] and the kids that have nothing mostly want the basics. My daughter hates to see other people hurt, but seems more offended by violence ...(Answered by PinkPrincessNerd)

Dont think that is a fair idea because it is mentioned on the paper that only red, blue and black ink is allowed. It again depends on the paper checker mood if he/she think that you have tried to be oversmart , you will have a problem and if he/she think that you have tried to help him he may be a normal checker. why take risk ?...(Answered by sikunj.patel)

Organize a "Yard Sale" with proceeds to go to a charitable organization. You will be able to get all the student body to clean their closets, volunteer their service (organization of items, running the sale, pricing items, collection of items), choosing a local charity, doing advertising (flyers, local papers may donate an ad)....and many other things. This would cover leadership (if you are the one doing the original plan and overseeing it), service, and character....(Answered by DONNA M)
