What happened to reading for fun? We have book reports about every six weeks in my English class. I don't mind, I love to read. However most of my class only read during book report time (usually the last week) because they want a good grade. They'd rather be going shopping and going to parties than having a quiet time (about an hour or so) reading. I find it really sad, especially since nearly 40% of my graduating class will have a reading level of a fourth grader. This isn't because they don't know how to read, they do, they don't take the time to read. ... (Asked by Allyson B) |

Can someone help me with my essay? My tutor wants me to prevent my essay from being a collection of statement? Smoking should be banned in public places This essay investigates the question of whether or not smoking should be banned in public places. The essay will cover the advantages and disadvantages of banning smoking in public places and how people react to this controversial issue. It should be pointed out that this question has been badly debated all over the country and there are many different views. Let us first of all consider the point of view that over 40,000 careful studies have proven that smoking causes disease and death (http://www.ash.org.uk/). Every medical and health agency agrees to the fact that smoking ... (Asked by Pinay) |

| It depends on what your tutor wants. If she wants it to be an expository essay, then it will be a collection of statements. Expository essays are to convey information. If it's supposed to be a persuasive essay, then you need to put your own opinion, and why you feel that way....(Answered by queenrakle) | |

What is the cause of geographic illiteracy in the United States? This is a less inflammatory way of saying, 'Why don't Americans know anything about the world?', but I don't mean it in a prejudiced or holier-than-thou way. It's often reported that, on standardised geographical tests given to students in countries around the world, Americans perform worse than any other country they survey. It's on Yahoo! News's main page at the moment: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060502/lf_afp/afplifestyleus_060502200853 Highlights: "63 percent of respondents could not find Iraq on a map and 75 percent could not find Israel or Iran." "Another hot spot in the news that failed to register with those questioned was Sudan, with 20 percent placing the African ... (Asked by edsawyer) |

| There are likely several reasons: First, in the United States, all politics are local. This is something you might expect in one of the world's impressive examples of democracy. The downside of this is an almost pathelogical inward-looking-ness that separates American from virtually all other jurisdictions. Second, the American press is largely driven by surveys which exascerbate this problem. The fact is that those who dont know where other jurisdictions are, are not likely to be interested in happenings in those countries. As a result, the press gives very little time to foreign events. Third, the United States is ...(Answered by Jo) | |

I like to write all over my books. Is this weird? I like to read books, particularly self help books. But when I'm reading them I tend to highlight and underline a lot of stuff. Then when I go back and reread it, I think I've made my books look sloppy and I often wonder, "Why did I highlight this? I don't see what was so important about it." ... (Asked by Vegas Dude) |
