My special needs child - should I "give in" on some of her services? Here's the deal... She is very intelligent and scored as high or higher than other kids her age but she's developmentally delayed and she has a SEVERE speech/language impairment... no one knows why. The last district we were in had enrolled her in a special all day communication disorders class. The new school district we are in is fighting me on everything (they don't have a "special" CD class yet - but will next year). They don't even want to provide transportation. I have met with them three times already (we've only been here 2 months) and ... (Asked by Yur Mama) |

| Don't give in! They are trying to wear you down! Do you have a PHP in your area (parents helping parents)? If so, call and ask them to sit in. Write a letter with all your reasons why she needs CD and transportations and send to them certified mail. Also call your state office of education and complain and copy letter to them....(Answered by laineyette) | |

| This has to be accomplished by a specific legal process, called IDEA 'individuals with disabilities education act' This is a FEDERAL law in which all public and private schools (who recieve state/federal funds) MUST 'find' children who are suspected of having disabilities and evaluate them to see if they qualify to recieve special education services within the school. Unfortunately, schools do not follow the laws, and fight with parents to no end becasue they do not want to help children who need it most. BUT, if you follow the IDEA laws the school has no choice but to follow these ...(Answered by jdeekdee) | |

| You really need to specify what disabilities you are trying to provide accomodations for, and what subjects/activities you're involved in. Except for people who are severely or profoundly impaired, inclusive activities should be the same activities as everyone else is doing. You just give them a bit more time, or physical supports, or whatever they need to be able to participate successfully. For severely or profoundly impaired people, you really have to identify what they really CAN do, and create an activity similar or a part of everyone else's that uses their abilities. For example, I have a 4th grade profoundly MR student ...(Answered by spedusource) | |

| Without knowing the age/ grade level of the child or the degree of visual impairment, it's hard to give specifics. Honest communication is the best. Interacting with people who have disabilities or differences can be a great learning experience for the other kids in the class, and even early elementary school kids understand if you tell them that all of us are alike in many ways and different in other ways. This can be an interesting discussion that gets kids thinking, and visual impairment is just one of the ways that some people are different. ...(Answered by sonomanona) | |

| People have been checking hearing in others for ages. Simply stand out of the vision of the person (behind them works well) and make a noise. See if they respond by looking for the noise or startling. Bells will make high pitched noise a drum can make a low pitched noise. Speak to the person to see if they can hear the human voice. You may want another person in front of the subject to check for a reaction. Such simple tests of hearing are best done without the knowledge of the person you are checking. Also use a quiet room ...(Answered by acornfullfilled) | |

| My bet is it is a combination of normal sexualality development and self stim. The best thing to do is to help redirect the child as soon as she starts the behavior. Often times autistic kids will react better to a visual cue than a verbal one. If there is already a visual cue or symbol being used by her parents or teachers to reprepsent "stop" that would be the best to use. Have it printed on a small card and have the parents carry it with them. As soon as the behavior starts, show ...(Answered by ) | |
