| I'm assuming you actually mean quotations... One should always use the double-looking quotations first, whether it be quoting a person, using a made-up word, or anything like that. However, what if there were a quote inside of a quote? The single quotes would go on the inside quote. Just look at this example: Anna said, "I turned around and then Tony said, 'Get out of my way.'"
