Q.
SAT question...?
I got a 510 in critical reading, a 560 in math, and a 580 in writing. So.. that means I got a 1650... Is that extremely horrible or mediocre? Can I get into the Polytechnic Institute of Virginia with that score? How do I find what colleges have cut-off SAT scores? I hate the SAT!!!! I'm not stupid, though, I have straight A's and I'm taking 3 AP courses and honors calculus... I just suck. ... (Asked by E)

Your score is slightly above average, which is nothing to really worry about since you have straight A's and are taking AP classes. The test itself is actually not that major of a part of a college application, where they look more on GPA. I would take the test again though( I jumped 110 points the second test) as it is extremely beneficial when considering they take the best score of each section. As far as the Polytech Institute of Virginia that shouldnt be a score that would keep you out, and if you really wanted to make sure, almost ...(Answered by LaxDman)

Q.
GRE: importance of analytical writing score?
I am currently applying to some top 25 programs in liberal arts, specifically phd programs in english/ comp lit at Berkeley, UCLA, Irvine. I did really well in my verbal score (700 at 96 percentile) but mediocre (4.5, 51 percentile) results in my analytical writing section. I graduated with 3.6 gpa in english from Chapel Hill. What are my chances at a good program with a lackluster gre writing score? ... (Asked by cmurphyenergy)

From what I've heard from colleagues and friends who work in Liberal Arts departments the GRE writing score is not factored in as heavily as your overall score, undergraduate GPA, and the writing sample that most programs require to be sent with the application. While programs usually use the GRE as a means of determining an applicant's overall standing it is most definitely not the only means of determining admissions status nor is it the most important. Having a strong writing sample to submit with your application as well as a good UGPA and good recommendations can in ...(Answered by langstaff)

Need advice...IB/AP, etc?
So, I'm a student in IB diploma programme, and I do a lot of AP classes too... But lately I've been feeling so unmotivated to do anything, and have been doing mediocre in classes, yet I can't decide if I want out or not, cause I worry about how I'll do in getting my diploma... Also, in my AP Sci class we have a teacher who isn't preparing us at all for the AP test, so I'm really worried about taking it, but does not taking it hurt me? I'm just looking for some advice :( ... (Asked by )

Sometimes you have to prepare by yourself and read ahead from the class. That will ensure a higher grade, if you don't understand what you have read ahead you can ask other science teachers for help, too. Some colleges see if you just try to take the AP exam while still getting a good grade in the class and they won't think you are lazy or whatever. Remember, there is no penalty for failing an AP test. Other people fail the tests because they were just having a bad day or they were sick and feeling sad. As long as ...(Answered by Yoshi1990usa)

A.
There is NO POSSIBLE WAY to turn genious. You have to be born with that I.Q. If you say mediocre, your I.Q. is probably 100 which is average. Just to be gifted you need an I.Q. of 130. You canot even raise your I.Q. that high. There is NOTHING wrong with being mediocre! Just work hard, and do your best!...(Answered by pittgradgirl)

SAT Critical reading tips?
As much as I try, my critical reading scores are always mediocre. In freshman year, I scored a 350 on my Critical reading, then in Sophmore year I raised it to a 500. I want to get my score to go in the 600's or better. I know the format well enough by now. I also watched a dvd, read a little bit of Barron's and prepared via College Board's own online course. I still have trouble. My score is in between a 500-600. If I'm lucky, I can get it in between 540-600 or if I'm down below...I get ... (Asked by Samisab)

540 isn't bad, but you can score better by analyzing what kind of mistakes you're making, learning when to skip and how to guess, and knowing how to read faster by skimming and summarizing. Consider getting some help from a book, a class, or a private tutor that will focus on your weaknesses. Finally, consider taking a free practice ACT at your local Kaplan center to see if you'd do better on the ACT. It's accepted by most schools, and many students who struggle with SAT reading perform much better on the ACT. good luck!...(Answered by Lighty)

Well, I just took my GRE and got an 1180... is that good?
I'm majoring in mathematics, and I'll prolly end up taking that subject test just for fun, but I just took the GRE this morning and I got a 750 on math, but only a 430 on verbal (I won't know writing for another couple weeks). I sent my scores to Uni Central Florida, Uni Miami, U Notre Dame, and Ball State U. So, my question is: Is my score good, bad, mediocre? I can't find any averages or anything on online, so if you can put a link, I'd appreciate it. Thanks ... (Asked by choirgirl1987)

If you're talking about scores on IQ tests, those are just that--scores on a test. The same person can score differently on different tests. This is especially true on the types of tests that are available free on the internet, which are notoriously unreliable. Regardless of test scores, people certainly can improve their overall intelligence and ability. You might or might not call the end result "genius", but you could call it mastery....(Answered by dmb)

No Child Left anywhere?
Bill Bennett and Rod Paige on national standards and tests! Former Education Secretaries Bill Bennett and Rod Paige weigh in on national standards and testing in the September 21 Washington Post: Forty years ago the sociologist James S. Coleman made clear that there's no reliable connection between the resources going into a school and the learning that comes out. Fifty years ago economist Milton Friedman made clear that in education, as in other spheres, monopolies don't work as well as markets. That's why most Republicans and some Democrats favor school choice in its myriad versions and why many, like us, have also ... (Asked by Rja)

While the idea of No CHild Left Behind is a noble sentiment, the whole plan has done far more harm to the school systems of this country than good. By tying funding into increased test scores, our government has forced our schools to go from educating our children to teaching them to test. As funds have shrunk, the available monies are used more and more to puch up the all important math and reading scores. The result is that while our kids are getting a lot of math (some schools have up to 180 minutes of math ...(Answered by Annie)
