Student visas do not easily convert to perm applications to live in the US. Most of my information is pre-9-11 so some of this may have change. The US Gov imigration web sites are a nightmare and very confusing. Canada is an ally of the US so you can easily get a visitation visa. A student visa is again not didficult to obtain.
