| TEACHING MORALS AND VALUES IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS: A HUMANIST PERSPECTIVE by Steven D. Schafersman March, 1991 Teaching morals and values in the public schools has been a frequently discussed topic in the past few years. Interestingly, most of the discussion has come from members of the religious right and individuals associated or sympathetic with their point of view. For example, Secretary of Education William Bennett recently urged conservative activists to join him in a fight to restore a "coherent moral vision" to America's public schools. Speaking to leaders of Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum, he declared that "We can get the values Americans share ...(Answered by Rosemary G) | |

| When we loose what morals we do have our society,we will fall. People in general may not want to hear this however, Our society has become to politicily correct. We don't pray in school so children don't have faith.( Faith is different than religion.) Children are babysat by videos and t.v. parents for get to have them work for their toys and games, because the are both working. Some are even in bed by time one comes home. (if you live in america). on the whole i do believe its important that schools educate students on what is wrong to do in our society. | It is very simple. As a child, we are not responsible for our actions. We are dependent on others for our safety, survival, learning, and moral code. A child raised with discipline and high expectations does have a "head start" on someone who wasn't raised that way when they reach adulthood; the one without that upbringing must still reach out for and find a proper moral code in order to be successful. An adult is independent, self-driven, and able to support him/herself. An adult is repsonsible for his/her own learning. Our past can provide us with either an example of how to live ...(Answered by spedusource) | |
