| I completely agree with this quote. It takes a strong individual to stand by they believe in. You can be pushed down and torn down b/c you stand by your beliefs. You also have to be strong to know that validation does not come from other people, but only from yourself and that is the bravest of them....(Answered by Bama sweetie) | |

Can anyone summarize this in words I can understand? Self-Reliance By Ralph Waldo Emerson? There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried. Not ... (Asked by SmartyPants) |

| One of the most profound truths of all time...I was so impressed by this essay 30 yrs. ago I copied it word for word...the essence in my opinion is found in his opening lines..."Every man is his own star" Find the source of life and light within your own self. Never be other than you truly are. Speak the simple truth...which you cannot do until you make the hardest journey...the one that goes to the depths of your soul. Please help me!!!!? My junior paper is due tomorrow, and im checking for puncuation errors and i ran into a huge problem: i don't know what the answer is. Here is an example of one of my issues: The shattering of her image remains sadly ironic, (?, is there a comma here?) “In a world so apparently devoid of truths, with such truths as there are generally, what hope does man have of obeying Polonius’ first commandment, “to thine own self be true’” (Reed 496). ... | there is no comma after "ironic", but the quote doesn't quite flow here. i would need to see the surrounding text to understand the over all idea you are trying to convey, but...it seems like you have two almost separate ideas here. first, you are saying that "the shattering of her image remains sadly ironic", but next you introduce a quote that does not really explain how this is so. you introduce a whole other idea with the in-quote question of "what hope does man have...be true". Maybe after this quote say "In light of (or, ...(Answered by jamoncita) | |

| I don't know about number 1, but number 2 is clearly from Shakespeare's "King Lear," spoken by the character called "The Fool." The project Gutenberg edition has it a little different than how you quote it, but I'm sure that's the origin. The word "master" is very important in King Lear, but it's not used in the way you have it in quote number 1. King Lear, Act I, Scene 5: Fool. If thou wert my fool, nuncle, I'ld have thee beaten for being old before thy time. Lear. How's that? Fool. Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been wise....(Answered by Steve D) | |
