Q.
Humiliation as a form of discipline at school?
My son is currently attending primary 2 (2nd grade) in Hong Kong. There were 2 occasions that he was 'punished' by standing in front of the whole class & being scolded at. One time was for forgetting to bring his handbook, another for not bringing back a notice that was supposed to be signed by me. During our ride to school today, my son finally informed me of this matter and expressed how upset & embarrassed he was. I am deeply hurt & bothered by this. Would you be? Did anyone of you have the same ... (Asked by LIHK)

Humiliation is the worst. I would rather have them beat my hands for an hour. The pain in your fingers goes away but the humiliation lasts and lasts. The only real way to deal with it is to have a close group of friends and very supportive parents who keep telling you that you are a valuable and wonderful person and that the teacher just doesn't understand or is too stupid to realize it....(Answered by elcid812)

I'm not sure that that's a generalization that you can really make. I think what you ought to look at, though, is whether schooling between the two countries has differences in how creativity is encouraged....(Answered by Brian L)

I was supposed to be paddled once, but some how got out of it. I was in elementary school. I saw many students get swats. I would say that they were probably pretty painful since even the boys would come back into the room crying and rubbing their hind ends. As far as being helpful, I surely didn't want to get a swat so I straitened up, but I know a boy that was paddled quite often, and it seemed to have no effect. Paddling in my school district in Illinois stopped when I was in the sixth grade. I graduated ...(Answered by justmyopinion)

A.
You could describe the situation that led to the decision and how the person felt it was a good decision at the time...but he/she was so wrong. Make it humorous by taking an unusual perspective on an ordinary decision...If it were my assignment, I'd go with humor. It's a bit trickier to write effectively, but it can be lots of fun! (Unless, of course, the prompt is a serious analysis). Any decision can turn out to be foolish--going out with someone who ends up being a jerk; choosing the cheeseburger for lunch over the grilled chicken ...(Answered by busymom)

My child is in yr 5 at school, he has been verbally bullied for the last few months at school. On the first 2 occasions the headmaster assured me it wouldnt happen again. Don't let the school off load the responsibility for this onto you. Go to the meeting but make it clear that if there is any further bullying you will go straight to the police and if you believe it to be true you will tell the police that the head teacher and other staff are aiding and abetting the bullying....(Answered by frasier)
