FAFSA EFC of 11972?!? After just being married in August, and just filing taxes with my new status of married filing jointly, I have finished my FAFSA for 2007-08. My EFC came back at 11972! OMG is this a joke? Combined my husband and I made 46,000. He pays 550 a month in child support (for one child) and we RENT a condo at 500 a month. Two car payments at 300 each, not to mention the insurance that goes along with owning a car. That right there is over half of what we bring home as a couple. To top that off, theres ... | because your daughter is 19 and not 24, no kids, or not married then she is considered a dependent. Since she has her own apt. and works and pays all her own bills, this does not make her independent, this rule is dedicated by the department of education. Hopefully, she has outstanding grades and have been active in her community to receive scholarships and the there are loans to consider or go to a community college 1st....(Answered by sunshine23511) | |

| No, it does not---not in ALL cases. There are many people with mortgages, fulltime jobs and spouses working fulltime, who apply for loans for med school and law school and who successfully receive such assistance, via a combination of grants, fellowships, scholarships and loans. Some scholarships require financial need, others simply require academic merit. Same idea applies for loans and grants. If you want need-based loans and grants then the amount you receive might be less if you own a home and your spouse works fulltime, etc. But it doesn't mean that you are disqualified, in most cases, from applying or ...(Answered by bookratt) | |

| Yes, your website would qualify as a business. A business is simply a person, partnership, or corperation engaged in commerce. I took a look at the scholarship program and you should definately qualify, but it's not likely they are just handing out the scholarships. It did state that "THE WINNERS" will have certain obligations, so there will definately be some scholastic requirements that have to be met. But go for it, the worst that can happen is they say no. Good luck and best wishes....(Answered by prodius54) | |

My children own stock in a minors account. When they go to college will this be held against them (aide)? Would it be better for me to own their stocks in my name before they are ready to go to college? They are preteens at the moment so it will be quite some time from now. So my questions are: should I convert (and is that legal) their minor accounts (stock) to my name to avoid it being held against them when they apply for aide for college? And when should I convert them over (wait until they are in High School or do it now???)? Thanks! ... (Asked by J Tap) |

| Yes, it will be held against them from what I have heard. A higher percentage of savings is held against a minor compared to a parent or adult. The best thing is to talk to a tax advisor and an investment planner (can be two seperate individuals) before taking any action....(Answered by dawncs) | |
