Will some other homeschooling parents please calm me down!!? I'm so unsure of my own abilites that I feel I may be selling my daugther short by teaching her at home. I keep hearing and reading about all these kids that are ahead of there peers by being home schooled. How can I be sure she's learning the samethings, and that she's mastering everything according to the standards if I'm not sure I even understand the "Standards". Don't get me wrong I'm an educated women, but I struggled for every "B" or "C" I got. Can someone please give me some advice on how to "destress myself" so my ... (Asked by danzr5678) |

| Ok, first of all all children learn at different paces and excell in one area and struggle with another. So if you don't think your child is 3 years ahead and she can't speak Latin, then you teach her where SHE is. That is the point of homeschooling. Your objectives should be giving her a well rounded education that will prepare her to go on to college if that is what she wants or to get a job in the field she is passionate about. She needs to be able to care for herself eventually, so ...(Answered by micheletmoore) | |

Anti-homeschoolers, would you care to...? Reiterate how great the public schools are because I'm not coming across such great findings... "The disconnect between real life and the high school experience and the absence of any real connection to peers and teachers causes many students on the margins to give up: More than 30 percent of U.S. students who enter high school never finish, according to a recent report by Harvard University's Civil Rights Project, the Urban Institute, Advocates for Children of New York, and the Civil Society Institute. Minorities are especially hard hit. Although graduation rates for whites average 75 percent, only about half of African Americans, ... (Asked by FreeThinker) |

| I believe you should consider the SOURCE of your quote above. Then read George Lucas' OWN experiences with public schools. He says he was often bored, and wanted school to be fun all the time. He offers this magazine in an effort to improve education, but in fact, you must remember HE HAS HIS OWN AGENDA AND SLANT on the matter. One thing I have learned as a career long public school teacher, is that EVERYBODY (at least in America) has an OPINION about schools. Many loved school, many hated school, and everything in between. ...(Answered by Mr. Z) | |

| Yes there is hope. You will have to make the studies appear on your priority list. I know you already have your hands full, and you are discouraged, but do not give up hope. You have already achieved much in your life, Keeping a family going is no small task, your friends will learn this someday and have a new respect for you. 22 is still very young and you have many years to achieve your goals. I know people that have finished their high school and college degrees much older than you while working and raising a family. There is a ...(Answered by Carol P) | |

How do you convince relatives to accept that you are homeschooling? My daughter, an only child has Asperger's Syndrome and I am having a hard time convincing my family to accept homeschooling her as a viable option. They think that I am unqualified to teach my own child and that I am doing her a disservice because she won't be forced to interact with her same age peers everyday. My own experience in "regular" school was almost entirely negative. I was bored out of my mind because the work was too easy and the more I was forced to "interact with my same age peers" the worse my social situation ... (Asked by dragonfly9151974) |

| Don't let your focus be on convincing them. You don't need their approval or agreement. It'd be nice, but you don't need it. The fact of the matter is that they are who they are with their own baggage and understanding. It's really not your place to convince them of something else; admittedly, it's not their place to try to convince you of something else, but two wrongs don't make a right. :) I suggest checking out the book Nonviolent Communication. It'll help you formulate ways to reflect back what they are saying and to address their fears as well as to ...(Answered by glurpy) | |

Why are people so against homeschooling? I'm 15, homeschooled and it ROCKS!!! I now own and run a small business with passive income (It deals with electronic sales), get higher SAT scores than my peers and I have colleges checking me out. Many of my fellow homeschooling peers get this as well, yet so many people are against homeschooling. Oh yes, and don't give me crap about anti-socialism. That's the biggest load of BS! I am in Speech/Debate, martial arts, tennis, Boy Scouts, co-ops and run my business. Don't say I'm not socialized or others are. So many of my friends take part in these activities....... Why go ... | I think the naysayers who have responded so far prove that it's really all about not having your facts straight and not understanding; about having complete misconceptions of homeschooling and homeschoolers. You just finished telling them all the stuff you participate in yet what was the first response? "How dus the kid make friends?" People don't get it. They can't conceive of homeschooling as it really is so they are against it. They have all kinds of stereotypes running around their heads, like "Most parents who want to home school are psychos--religious nuts". Of the many, many families I have met ...(Answered by glurpy) | |

Home schooled/public schooled? If people say that public schooled kids are influenced by their peers, wouldn't that mean home schoolers are influenced by their peers also? What’s the difference between a public schoolers socializing with peeps from school, and what’s the difference between a home schooler socializing with peeps from home school groups? Everyone is influenced by their peers, so why is it that a lot (not all) of people say that public schoolers are a bad influence to each other? And also, I hear a lot about colleges recruiting home schooled student’s right? But don't they recruit public/private schoolers to? Both are accepted into college’s ... (Asked by Sydney) |

| Yes, homeschooled kids are influenced by their peers. The point is that everybody is influenced by those around them and the more time you spend with a certain influence, the more likely you are to adopt whatever's going on. (Of course, then there's the issue of not necessarily being influenced but just having to grow up around all that.) This goes for adults, too. If you hang around negative people, you're more likely to become negative. Whereas adults have a choice in where they work and with whom they work, kids in school don't have a choice. "Everyone is influenced ...(Answered by glurpy) | |

| My kids aren't that age yet, but I know various homeschooled jr high+ kids. Some are academically ahead, some aren't. Some were pulled out of school and are more academically ahead now than they would have been had they stayed in school, but may still not be quite as able. The biggest difference I find is the maturity and reasoning level among homeschooled teens vs. public schooled teens. There is a definite difference there where homeschooled teens do tend to think through things more maturely....(Answered by glurpy) | |

Why do some people think that homeschooled children are going to be social misfits? I think that all children are unique. In the public school system some, not all, children get eaten alive by their peer group. It crushes the "uniqueness" out of them. Most homeschool parents choose not to have only the socialization that public school provides. If anything peer pressure causes undesirable behavior such as drugs, alcohol, sexual experimentation, bad attitudes by those children they are socializing with. If children do not bend to the will of the more popular opinion they are made fun of, called names, bullied and just made to feel miserable. And everything ... (Asked by Bethie) |

| Because people base their thoughts on misinformation or faulty reasoning. I personally would LOVE to know what sort of psychological training some of the people who are answering have!!! All kinds of pseudo-psychological nonsense that sounds 'good' but is so far off base. I have taken courses on psychology and human development and nowhere did it ever indicate that children NEED to be surrounded with others the same age for 35 hours a week in order to learn how to relate to others. If that were a fact, the human race spent thousands of years doing it all wrong and all those ...(Answered by glurpy) | |

At what point did peer influence and socializaion become such an important consideration in education? As a homeschooler, I am often asked about this. The vast majority of homeschoolers are well socialized, just not peer dependent. Most Americans were taught at home before the mid 1800's and socialization was not a topic. Here are a few notable people who were homeschooled. How do you suppose they were able to accomplish all they did without the all important public school peer group? What is the reasoning behind putting so much importance on a person having as much involvement with their peer group as todays kids have? Generals: Stonewall Jackson Robert E. Lee Douglas MacArthur George Patton Inventors: Alexander ... (Asked by answer man) |
