| The percentage of commercial pilots who were military is not as high as answerer 1 states. There are many flight schools in the USA. Pick up a FLYING magazine to get an idea of what is out there. Look at your local flight school and see if they have packages. There are some cheaper flight schools in Oklahoma, that is where I trained for part of mine. Universities will suck you dry of $. | Try to hang around a Municipal airport, those small ones where Private pilots keep their planes or look around for small planes. What you want to do is befriend someone with a plane. BE CAREFUL!!! You not want to get tied up with some pervert!!!!! There are many good people and if you hang around you will meet them. Tell about your interest to learn and ask what you need to do to get your license? You may be very surprised. First you have to take a test it like a Driving Test for a car before you actually drive ...(Answered by snagelfritz) | |

| The cost really depends on the corse taken and the school attended no matter where you train. In the US, it varies from $45,000 to over $100,000. I suggest going to this site as it is aimed at aspiring commercial pilots and is largely European- http://www.pprune.org Their message boards are filled with hundreds of questions like yours already. You can find some info about specific schools or locations by using their search function....(Answered by Av8trxx) | |

| As an airline pilot, I suggest that you get your Private Pilot certificate, and even your instrument rating, before you commit yourself and large sums of money to pursuing this career. You don't know if you will even like it if you haven't had any experience in the cockpit. There is sooooo much to for you to know about and to consider! It couldn't possibly be all covered in this forum. As such, I suggest checking out my advice website about getting your PPL and airline pilot careers at- http://www.geocities.com/av8trxx99/FAQ.html Additionally, this is a wonderful site created by a Delta Airlines First Officer ...(Answered by Av8trxx) | |

| You will need a two year degree at a minimum to be competitive for a regional airline job. To be hired with a major like American, Delta ect (when they hire again years down the road) you will need a 4 year degree. It's true, there are many pilots looking for work, but not at the regional level like on the major level. The competition is most fierce at the major level as the pilots furloughed after 9/11 are looking for other jobs, junior pilots at majors doing poorly are looking to jump ship or the more senior pilots at ...(Answered by Av8trxx) | |

| CIVILIAN ROUTE 1. Get your pilot certificates and ratings via a flying club or school at the local airport, or a university aviation program. A newly certificated commercial pilot with instrument and multi-engine ratings usually has about 250 hours. This is not enough for the airlines*. (See note* at bottom) 2. Build up flight experience until about 1,000 flight hours. Most regional airlines require pilots to have at least 1,000 hours of flight time, with 100 of that being in multi-engine aircraft and a Commercial/Multi/Instrument certificate. (An Airline Transport Pilot certificate is not required until you make captain.) Common time building jobs ...(Answered by Av8trxx) | |

| Most commercial airline pilots were in USAF service as fighter pilots, a very nice touch on a resume that merits higher pay status. My estimation, because pilots are in high demand, of their annual salaries would be somewhere in the $60k to $86k range. They're desperately needed for airline business survival; the government can't just fire them all and replace them like Regan did with air traffic controllers in the 80's. For Uncle Sam to try would mean draining the U.S. active military fighter pilot resource, which would take YEARS to replenish--and at a critical stage of "war" in ...(Answered by Mr. Wizard) | |

| Many routes but it seems the best and quickest way forward is to contact one of the large flight schools, Oxford in particular have a good history of placing cadets into airlines. It's also worth looking at the CTC wings programme which covers all training and type conversion onto B737 or A320 aircraft and then places cadets for six months with an airline. Either way it's not cheap and once accepted by an airline they will usually bond you for a three year period to protect some of their costs....(Answered by stortfordman) | |
