What's the best way to conduct an observational INSECT LAB?
I'll need to organize a 50 minute lab for high school biology students. I have about 100 preserved insects of various species. My mentor has told me that they will be looking at different insects under the dissecting microscope. My thoughts on this are that I should take about 10 of them and give them diagrams of their external anatomy. The students would split up into groups of 2 and take turns looking at each of these, identifying specific structures. If there was time left after this was done, they could look at other insect species and identify similar structures on ... (Asked by Starblazer)

Quick question: Why are they looking at these insect specimens? That is, what principle are you trying to illustrate, what objective are you trying to reach? Once you know this, then the rest of the activity will be easier to design. An activity without an objective can be frustrating for students--they see it as just a bunch of lines to fill out, without realizing the purpose. Do the different structures relate to the insects' habits and habitat? Why are they different in different insects? What does knowing the structures of the insects tell you as a biologist? Once you know ...(Answered by snowberry)

What can you do to motivate students (18 yo) who lack initiative and self-discipline?
I am a student teacher who is currently undertaking a teaching practice at a low banding school(schools in where I live are banded). Although my students are generally sociable, they are difficult when it comes to homework and assignments - They just don't do their works. Anyway, I would like to motivate my students to do their works, but I want to do it in such a way that I can preserve my relationship with them. Do you have any suggestions? ... (Asked by Sam)

Use reward and praise. Make a big fuss of the students who have done their homework, say how pleased you are that they have put in such effort, praise the quality of their work, give various examples of what you particularly liked. Speak to each child individually and give them praise in front of all the ones who have not done their homework. What this shows is that 1) You have spent time and effort marking their homework 2) You know the individuals concerned and the work they have done (take notes if you have to) 3) You care ...(Answered by martic)

Q.
What can we do to help people understand that this life must be lived better?
Life today has become abnormal Anyone who looks at our contemporary life from the perspective of the normal life lived by people in earlier times—say, Russia, or America, or any country of Western Europe in the 19th century—cannot help but be struck by the fact of how abnormal life has become today. The whole concept of authority and obedience, of decency and politeness, of public and private behavior—all have changed drastically, have been turned upside down except in a few isolated pockets of people—usually Christians of some kind—who try to preserve the so-called "old-fashioned" way of life. ... Howard Stern is a famous TV talk show host. Deborah Roach, a self-described topless dancer, was a perennial guest on the Howard Stern show. She died of an overdose at age 27. Deborah was cremated. Her family gave her remains to Chaunce Hayden, (her close friend) with the understanding that he would preserve and honor her remains in an appropriate manner. Hayden took the cremated remains to Stern’s talk show. Stern and Hayden made crude comments during the show that were broadcast on national television.
