The best way to teach feelings to young children is through modeling, role play, books, and labeling the feelings. Feelings are an abstract concept, therefore they need concrete presentations, and young children often struggle to understand them. Books are always a great place to start, focus on the most obvious feelings first: Happy, Sad, Mad, they are the jumping point for every other emotion. They are also the easiest for children to recognize. When a child is displaying their feelings in the class, identify it, or question how they are feeling, then help them identify WHY, if it as a negative feeling, ...(Answered by Heather)

Q.
Teaching Preschool Kids?
I'm going to school to become a teacher. In two weeks I have interview with the Education Board and I have to present a video to them of me teaching. I work at a preschool in the afternoons (we don't really teach then, just let the kids play and do some art) and I'm planning to tape myself there. Many of the kids in my class are from foster homes or had abusive parents and are now with their grandparents so most of them don't know how to recognize their letters/numbers yet. I was wonder what kind of lesson would ... (Asked by Tara C)

You could use newspaper or magazines to help teach letters. Have them circle a particular letter you are teaching them or cut out the letters from magazines or newspaper. They could glue them on something - card stock, posterboard, construction paper, paper plates, etc. Or you could have a little contest to see who can find the most "B's" or whatever letter or number you are teaching them. If you are teaching them colors, you can have them find pictures in magazines (libraries are a great resource to get magazines or even a freecycle.org group in ...(Answered by Joyce P)

Q.
What should a pre-schooler need to know prior to starting kindergarten?
My wife and I recently put our daughter into a daycare/preschool that we thought had a great deal of emphasis on learning. Well we are finding out there is a lot of socialization and different "centers" that she work at, but she can't recognize but 7 letters and can count to 20 but can only recognize numbers up to 10. My wife and I who are very busy with our business took inventory of this the other day and were shocked. We totally and fully blame ourselves for not working on this more with her and not ... I actually see two separate issues here, marconi77. I think you need to recognize that your child needs basic skills and needs to develop some important attitudes as well. For me as a teacher learning is about skills and attitudes. Skills - I suggest your daughter will benefit greatly from knowing the alphabet and a word or two that begins with each letter. Knowing the primary colours and several secondary colours will help, as well as basic shapes. Counting as high as she is able to go is good. Holding a writing tool correctly, using ...(Answered by kennyj)

Q.
what age do kids start to read basic words like cat?
my son started reading words (see list below) at the age of 25 months old.... it is not only by reading written words on book, but he can read my actual handwriting, and even when i just recite the letters (spelling)... he would read the letters individually, then at the end, say the word... no pictures or anything to give him clues.... he knows his alphabets (recognize and recite), count up to 29, all his shapes (trapezoid, octagon, pentagon included), all his colors... he is now 26.5 months and can read at least 8 words. cat, cow, car, dog, ... Oh geez, some of these answers are harsh! I believe that there is a huge variation in reading development from 2-5 years although I believe that most kids start to identify words as your son is doing around 3. This has to be differentiated from reading though as it is mostly recognition and memory. I don't say this to take away from his accomplishments - he is obviously advanced. But the differences between kids are huge in this area - that is why you will usually find developmental milestones that list the least requirement only (for example, must say ...(Answered by wd2crv)

Q.
What's the name of the system that teaches infants to recognize the alphabet and read words?
I remember seeing it on a television special. A small child read the word "bubble", and others from flash cards, while another saw a flash card reading "wave" and he began to wave. Although there attention spans are low, they say the prime time for youth to learn is from infancy to toddler years. By kindergarten most of that deep-rooted potential is passed by. Any information on it would be grand. It was not hooked on phonics. The program was something involving the Dr.'s name who created it. ... (Asked by no one)

Some children just take time to develop so waiting to see might be a good option. On the other hand, if you are worried about his development than you can call your local school and ask for a referral for assessment. By law, the public school system must assess children for disabilities or learning delays and provide them with educational services if they are found to be delayed. How is your child's language? does he speak about the same as other kids his age? Does he pay attention to things that interest him? How are his self-help skills? Does he ...(Answered by meridocbrandybuck)

Q.
By what age should a child know and recognize the ABC's?
I have a 4 yr old daughter that "can't" learn her ABC's. We have sat down and went over and over them. Starting with A, B, and C only. I can hold up a flash card, tell her that "this letter is an A" and keep telling her and make her tell me. Then I pick the flash card up again and ask her what it is and she will tell me she either doesn't know or she will ask me what it is. It's getting frustrating because I knew my alphabet by age 3. ... (Asked by King)

Each child is different, he will know them buy the end of kindergarten. Maybe due another year of preschool, perhaps a famtastic 5's class. In the big picture when he is 30 it will no matter if he knew them at 3 or at 6. Just enjoy him and let him be a kid, they grow up to quickly. Do work on them, just not a lot of pressure....(Answered by Faith M)

Each child learns in their own time, in my house all three of my children were recognizing letters by the time they were your childs age--maybe not at 80% but enough that two of my three children were reading by the time they were three years old, the third could not even talk till two and a half. The best thing you can do for both of your children is continue to work with both of them, encouraging their successes and encouraging all of their attempts. the more you do this the more they will learn and retain. Also may ...(Answered by TchrzPt)
