Q.
Need some help instituting a recycling program in my school....?
I basically asked the principal at my high school if he would like to recycle paper by just putting a green box in a every class room for students to dump their paper in. He said that student's had tried this in the past but the program didn't last long as the janitors don't clean them out. He said that there was a recycling club and students stayed after school and carried the boxes to a central location in the school where the recycling truck would come and pick it up. The thing is that the students who did this ... (Asked by malayalimc)

Hi, We've been using a fairly innovative way in our schools to encourage paper recycling. Since we (at the moment) are unable to provide containers to all of our classrooms, we developed an approach that actually recycles more materials out of the schools. We ask each of the classrooms to collect their paper in a cardboard box. This way, when it's full, it can be placed into one of the local recycling bins, either at the school, or in the town. Since it seems like your school already has containers in the classrooms, this may not work, but it's ...(Answered by Adam S)

Our town has a pickup program that has been in operation for 20 years. Once per week we put our glass, metal and paper recylclables at the curb in special plastic containers (look like garbage cans). The town also has used motor oil "igloos" for boaters and homeowners to deposit used oil from oil changes. The town also has special collections for other pollutants such as insecticides, batteries, electronics etc. The town also operates floating depositories for boat "waste". See below....(Answered by Answer King)

Advice on Starting a Recycling Program at My College...?
Hey, Im a student at a community college in Virginia. There is no recycling at all here and I want to start a program. I have a meeting about it with the dean of the school soon. Any advice? Like, does anyone know of a place to get really inexpensive recycling bins (that the school could buy)? Im not even sure who would bring the stuff to the recycling center. I feel horrible though every time I go into the computer lab and there are hundreds of sheets of paper in the trash and tons of bottles in the trash ... (Asked by jancanyon)

A.
The best thing to do is do a little research before meeting with the dean. First call your local trash disposal agency (or the city waste management department) find out if they will collect recycling at the college and how much it would cost. The maintenace department at your school could give you this information. Often times they can provide you with recycling bins at a minimal cost. Also you do not need special bins. For example in computer labs you can decorate boxes as collection sites or for cans and bottles use any large plastic trash container and maybe ...(Answered by Stacy)

A.
The answer to the first question is Yes. As to how much energy we can save and how much garbage we can reduce, I'd recommend calling the local disposal service. Most of them either have recycling programs, or have at least studied them. I've noticed recycling has caught on big-time in the California cities but is lagging in the smaller towns such as the one where I live. So I found a local non-profit group that hires handicapped people to collect recyclables, and I started a compost heap. I may not be the perfect example you're looking for, but since I ...(Answered by Thinker)

Have them pick up things that people have littered around the street (but not in it!) or at a park... show that it is a good thing to keep the park clean so they can have fun and not get hurt. Bring them to the recycle center and have them turn in the paper/plastic/metal and explain that it helps keep trees alive and thing like that.. There is a nature center near where I live, maybe you have one nearby... they show all kinds of things that could be related to keeping the environment clean... Good luck and have fun!...(Answered by P!ss Ant)

A.
It means instead of putting "discards" (the things you no longer want and are throwing away) into the trash...you can either put them in recycling bins (if they are glass, or cans, or paper, etc.), where they can be broken down and reused to make new items, or if they are clothes in good condition, you can donate them to Goodwill or Salvation Army so others can use them....(Answered by Anne)
