Dear Yahoo!: Who came up with the adage "it's never over 'til the fat lady sings"? Ruth London, Ontario Dear Ruth: It's the bottom of the ninth. The home team is down by five. Things look bad, but then again, "it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings." The phrase, a form of self-reassurance (or denial) in the face of long odds, is usually muttered when things look grim. The adage sounds like it sprung from the mouth of a weary opera patron, but it was actually coined by a sportswriter and broadcaster named Dan Cook....(Answered by MiaDiva27 <myea1o>)

The quote, "The opera ain't over until the fat lady sings" originated with San Antonio sports broadcaster Dan Cook during a television newscast in April 1978. He coined the famous phrase after the first basketball game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Washington Bullets during the 1977-78 National Basketball Association playoffs, to illustrate that while the Spurs had won once, the series was not over yet. The quote has often been attributed to Dick Motta, coach of the Washington Bullets basketball team, but it actually originated with Cook. Cook said his line was a takeoff on Yogi Berra's line, ...(Answered by mypalovalteen)

I don't think there's a definite answer. Here's what I found: There seems to be a strong likelihood that "It's not over until the fat lady sings" began as a reference to opera, especially the sort of Wagnerian epic that involves large women wearing helmets with horns.
