| Try writing a social story. Carol Gray's website is very helpful for this. Clearly identify when and why you have to wait. This really works for kids who can comprehend the verbal and/or written story. If they are lower functioning, use a picture schedule or pair a "wait" card with the action of waiting. You might really have to practice this in various settings before generalization will occur. Another thing I have tried is giving a "stim" item to take the pressure off of waiting. | If you work for a school district check to see if they offer any classes (most do) or check into community. Often libraries or high schools have computer classes they offer at a reasonable price. | Talk to yourself, talk to everybody. Get used to verbal dialogue, go to the delicatessan, talk to your server in a restaurant. When you take the emphasis away from how people perceive you, your mind will be free to concentrate on what you are actually saying. | I assume the students you are working with are significantly developmentally delayed. There is a program called the Life Horizons program that is especially designed to deal with this issue. It is available through the James Stanfield Company and there are a variety of materials and modules. It is an excellent resource. You will need to discuss it thoroughly with the parents, and possibly work through some of it with them so they see what is involved.
