| In the story, Askar is on a self-defeating search for a unified self-hood (remember, he was born Somali, but raised by a woman of another group in a disputed area of Ethiopia), Askar's "self" is created by the conflicts within him, by him constantly splitting apart, constantly judging, accusing, and defending the different parts of himself.
