Q.
Is this a propaganga WW1 Poem? not too sure myself..?
Here are the 1st two stanzas: What will you lack, sonny, what will you lack, When the girls line up the street Shouting their love to the lads to come back From the foe they rushed to beat? Will you send a strangled cheer to the sky And grin till your cheeks are red? But what will you lack when your mate goes by With a girl who cuts you dead? Where will you look, sonny, where will you look, When your children yet to be Clamour to learn of the part you took In the War that kept men free? Will you say it was naught to you if France Stood up ... (Asked by Sandy itz Handy!)

It is a propaganda poem because it threatens the reader with an ominous passage at the end: if you fail ("funk"), you will have nowhere to turn your eyes but downward in shame, because you will not have succeeded in doing your duty. The poem is government propaganda that attempted to urge young men to join up. The questions asked in lines 1-4 and 5-6 are designed more to get the listener thinking about the subject; they are rhetorical, and have no direct answer. The other questions are designed to stimulate the fear of being a coward, except for ...(Answered by blunderbuss)

Is there a bit more at the end? So, the poem completes or reverses common sayings about nature, which creates a feeling of violent disorder and confusion. A lot of emphasis appears to be put upon sounds, which gives it the appearance of a classic nonsense poem, especially given its first conclusion that when all these cataclysmic reversals come to be "the single secret will still be man." The second stanza takes common pairs (hills and valleys, hope and terror, soul and mind, etc) and "blow"s them together in an action still undeniably violent. An anthropocentric approach implies that ...(Answered by D B)

I apologize In advance for being so long-winded. This passage is from Acts 15:22-29 In order to understand the passage it is necessary to look into it's context. At the beginning of chapter 15 there were men who came to Antioch and began preaching that in order for the gentiles (non-jews) to become Chrisitians, they must follow the Jewish law. The apostle Paul and his missionary partner Barnabas came into dispute with them. Paul argued that he had seen the Holy Spirit come to the Gentiles and their faith had saved them. The church decided to have a council meet in ...(Answered by Jeff H)

Q.
Is this quote from Frankenstein written correctly and, if so, why?
In this paragraph Victor Frankenstein is speaking with Mr. Kirwin after having come out of his two-month fever from seeing his friend's body, Henry Clerval, strangled by his monster. He speaks with Mr. Kirwin in his native language, French, on his father coming from Geneva to see him in the prison. "'My father!' cried I, while every feature and every muscle was relaxed from anguish to pleasure, 'Is my father indeed come? How kind, how very kind! But where is he, why does he not hasten to me?'" Is "Is my father indeed come?" correctly written and, if so, why? It just ... (Asked by Belie)

I don't have the book in front of me, but the quote is correct as far as I can see. It is odd indeed, but it's a valid archaic construction of the past participle of 'come'. The French language retains that strange use of the present tense "is/am/are" in past-tense constructions (e.g. "je suis anné en 1976")...(Answered by bonshui)

In Korea, a centipede in the home is considered an omen of death. In the American south, if a dog howls at night, the master of the house will soon die. Also from Korea; if a toad gets in the house, it'll bring bad luck. (Korean also) The scarier or gorier the dream, the better the luck for the dreamer. Masturbation will make you go blind. All Native Americans are allergic to alcohol. African Americans can't see at night. Seeing the bride before the wedding is considered unlucky....(Answered by Mr. Mauser)

A vulture was hacking at my feet. It had already torn my boots and stockings to shreds, now it was hacking at the feet themselves. Again and again it struck at them, then circled several times restlessly round me, then returned to continue its work. A gentleman passed by, looked on for a while, then asked me why I suffered the vulture. "I'm helpless," I said. "When it came and began to attack me, I of course tried to drive it away, even to strangle it, but these animals are very strong, it was about to spring at my face, ... (Asked by joseph m)

It's very much easier to understand when you include the lines immediately preceding. The whole speech is this: Ah, good father, Thou seest, the heavens, as troubled with man's act, Threaten his bloody stage: by the clock, 'tis day, And yet dark night strangles the travelling lamp: Is't night's predominance, or the day's shame, That darkness does the face of earth entomb, When living light should kiss it? In other words, the sky is behaving oddly, perhaps in response to the awful murder of Duncan. The clock says it's daytime, but the sun's light is blocked ("dark night strangles the travelling lamp"). Why is it dark when ...(Answered by Steve D)
