Q.
Can you teach the kids of illiterate parents some very basic sight words, letter?
tracing using sandpaper letters, and teaching simple words (cat, mat) to small (3) groups of pre-K students during naptime, after a full day of normal pre-K activities? This would be enrichment only and enjoyable for the kids at all times. Of course there would be some selection, obviously some kids just wouldn't benefit, but others would. What do you think the research says about doing something like this? I am becoming a pre-K teacher because I want to do this. However, I am subbing in a classroom with a very intelligent older teacher who taught 1st grade for 17 years. she ... (Asked by Roberta S)

I absolutely agree with you! Kids can do both at the same time. I worked with two and three year olds this way, and when I tell you my 2's could read words I'm being completely honest! the sand paper tracing is a concept used in a lot of Montessori Preschools and it's a great technique. By getting them to recognize the letters they can eventually recognize words. For instance, work with them on a certain letter, say, D. Only work with D for awhile, and when they can name it when you point ...(Answered by christy_lynn12)

Q.
Teaching Preschool Kids?
I'm going to school to become a teacher. In two weeks I have interview with the Education Board and I have to present a video to them of me teaching. I work at a preschool in the afternoons (we don't really teach then, just let the kids play and do some art) and I'm planning to tape myself there. Many of the kids in my class are from foster homes or had abusive parents and are now with their grandparents so most of them don't know how to recognize their letters/numbers yet. I was wonder what kind of lesson would ... (Asked by Tara C)

You could use newspaper or magazines to help teach letters. Have them circle a particular letter you are teaching them or cut out the letters from magazines or newspaper. They could glue them on something - card stock, posterboard, construction paper, paper plates, etc. Or you could have a little contest to see who can find the most "B's" or whatever letter or number you are teaching them. If you are teaching them colors, you can have them find pictures in magazines (libraries are a great resource to get magazines or even a freecycle.org group in ...(Answered by Joyce P)

To find what programs are available, try contacting Child Care Resource & Referral Network. Their website is http://www.naccrra.org. They can tell you what is available in your area, if the programs currently have openings & the costs. Also, research on early childhood education shows that children learn best through play experiences. Not sitting in front of the TV as the one program you described, but not necessarily drilling them in academic skills either. They should be playing all day long, but the play should be structured so that they gain the max benefit from the ...(Answered by preschool_teacher_03)

Q.
What's the name of the system that teaches infants to recognize the alphabet and read words?
I remember seeing it on a television special. A small child read the word "bubble", and others from flash cards, while another saw a flash card reading "wave" and he began to wave. Although there attention spans are low, they say the prime time for youth to learn is from infancy to toddler years. By kindergarten most of that deep-rooted potential is passed by. Any information on it would be grand. It was not hooked on phonics. The program was something involving the Dr.'s name who created it. ... (Asked by no one)

Or if you aren't crafty you can buy pre-made books at most teacher supply shops....(Answered by chellyk)
