I've just come back from a friend's house and you have to be a contortionist to get to the toilet paper, it's so far behind it's just not practical. In the United States, before the invention of toilet paper in 1857, people generally used catalog pages, flyers, advertisments, and any other un-needed paper item. I'm sure that one sometimes resorted to leaves, a hankerchiefm rags or washing with soap and water as well when need be. Actually, though toilet paper was invented in 1857, it didn't catch on until a bit later when indoor plumbing became a fad. This is a true story..and I still feel 'evil' whenever I remember it...........I was visiting my parents place 20 yrs ago with my son who was in the midst of toilet training. My father had just got home, a bit sizzled, after many retirement drinks. My son went to the toilet, and after a couple of minutes, screamed and screamed. When I was in London a couple of weeks ago, a group of us was sitting around in a pub on Saturday afternoon (what a cliché!) and someone mentioned that the reason that the English "loo" is so named because the toilet was commonly located in room 100 of buildings and the two ("loo" and "100") look very much the same. (You can see that I jotted that tidbit down on my analog Palm Pilot (upper right quadrant) for later reference.)
