| Toilet Paper was used in China as early as 875 A.D., twenty years prior to the earliest known Hebrew manuscript of the Old Testament on paper. In our age, toilet paper originally not in a rollJoseph Gayetty invented toilet paper in 1857. His new toilet paper was composed of flat sheets. Before Gayetty's invention, people tore pages out of mail order catalogs - before catalogs were common, leaves were used.Unfortunately, Gayetty's invention failed. | In the United States, before the invention of toilet paper in 1857, people generally used catalog pages, flyers, advertisments, and any other un-needed paper item. I'm sure that one sometimes resorted to leaves, a hankerchiefm rags or washing with soap and water as well when need be. Actually, though toilet paper was invented in 1857, it didn't catch on until a bit later when indoor plumbing became a fad. I guess most people just didn't appriciate soft things in sensative areas....(Answered by minuteblue) | |

| This is a true story..and I still feel 'evil' whenever I remember it...........I was visiting my parents place 20 yrs ago with my son who was in the midst of toilet training. My father had just got home, a bit sizzled, after many retirement drinks. My son went to the toilet, and after a couple of minutes, screamed and screamed. Mum and I rushed in to find son looking down at what he had 'produced', which had landed on top of Dads false teeth...took ages to convince son the teeth were not his. Mum got teeth out and put in ...(Answered by jenna) | |

Turns out that pub chat aside, the jury is somewhat out on the etymology of "loo" (unless the OED, ...(Answered by softball Queen) | |
